Preface

I’ve conjured a vision of the grotesque,                                                                    
of morbid fascination with violence, 
and the aestheticization of war.

Indulge in hallucinations from the bourgeois cosmos,
of bazaars and mosques gripped by faith and mistrust,
of desert movements encumbered by tradition and hashish.
Around the fulcrum of 9/11 revolve the paranoid projections of agency.

The second act must be swallowed as a savage pill.
(Concentrate on ferocity.) Here is resentment,
self-harm, and reconnaissance as rhythm and sound.

Finally an endless dismal wail
collecting all the old shit.
Does anything happen?
Meditate in dread. 
Regret and transformation is
the mystic desire to repeat the 21st century. 

At the limits of exhaustion comes apocalyptic redemption,
a coda to wake the dead and enlist them anew.

In the cemetery stones feather clouds. Breath moving over our heads, the deer redden against the last century you remember. Some of you don’t know we landed on the moon. Some of you do not compute. Some of you freeze angels in moss, children holding lambs, some infants still opening their eyes. They watch dusk seep over the fawns and white spots rub off in the grass. Some of you wait for bats. In this time a dog barks distance, thickening trees. A pink heaves the sound of my heart against over and over again. This is one way to carry your breath in my chest, waiting for twilight to twin us again, lying in the circle of each other’s sweat. We make sugar from urges that rot in my mouth. 

At home in the saddening of green, our tongues reach back into our thoughts, gritted by gnats that don’t make it. As holding your face in my mind against all these passing trucks, their children spilling over onto the road, the road itself fluttering, as if in thinking through your face to reach back into the creek, a song with scalloped rock. I’m sure we could lose the shape of our hearts in all this weather. Going on over the peaks of roofs, sloping into the shallows of August’s last insects, a necklace of singing, running into the way you veer through my veins, thirst that wine wins over with the way music talks about us, and over and above some love that always needs killing, some truth that thins as we drain the light away. There are throats to cradle babies that cry without ever opening their mouths. There’s the angels bats at sunset carry off above the trees. There was a fire that thinks about you all the time. And behind it all your smile, a trail of stars leading into wounds that unravel me.

But before we lose the trees I need to teach you how to light yourself on fire so you’ll have enough light to know each step for what it has to be: a broken fuss without a name for you; a place folded into the last century.
