Fossils and archaeology. Evolutionary assumptions place fossil formation millions of years in the past. However, fossils themselves present some problems with this assumption. Many palaeontologists have now been able to extract soft tissues from fossils, such as proteins, DNA, collagen, red blood cells and haemoglobin. These molecules are very delicate and degrade in 20,000 years or less in average conditions. This evidence is completely at odds with long age theories. Soft tissue molecules, such as DNA, also provide evidence that directly challenges conventional thought about species evolution.

A kulturális örökség társadalmi kohéziót, gazdasági lehetőségeket és oktatási értéket biztosít. Hozzájárul a közösség identitástudatához és a folytonossághoz. The story of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation and its Historical Committee—and its fifty-year fight to recover and rewrite its history—is the focus of Rose Miron’s award-winning book Indigenous Archival Activism. Miron’s research and writing are shaped by materials found in the tribal archive and ongoing conversations as part of her more-than-a-decade-long reciprocal relationship with the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation. Miron is not Mohican and is careful to consider her own positionality and reflects on what it means for non-Native researchers and institutions to build reciprocal relationships with Indigenous nations in the content of academia and public history, offering a model both for tribes undertaking their own reclamation projects and for scholars looking to work with tribes in ethical ways. Here, Miron is joined in conversation with Jennifer O’Neal.



Rose Miron is vice president of research and education at Newberry Library in Chicago and author of Indigenous Archival Activism: Mohican Interventions in Public History and Memory, winner of the National Council for Public History Book Award and the Book of Merit Award from the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Jennifer O’Neal is assistant professor and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon.

On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel digs deeper into the controversy brewing in Lewis County, WA where a decision by the Board of County Commissioners - with little or no public input to sell a historic building with a two-week bidding process - has caught many residents off guard, and upset some who care about history and historic preservation.

The Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington was built in 1858 and is one of the oldest structures in the Evergreen State. Lewis County Commissioners approved a plan on July 15, 2025 to auction it off as surplus property; the deadline for bids is July 31, 2025. Criteria for the winning bid is described as "highest and best" - as far as who can guarantee preservation of the building - but the process and the way it's described in official documents strikes some as a little unclear.

In this episode, we hear public comment from the Board of Commissioners meeting of July 15, 2025 when the plan was adopted; we speak with Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock in an interview from July 16, 2025; and another interview from later the same day with descendant of the original church builder, Marla LeFevre.
