This is an archive of The Clean Up Hour, which should air May 5, 2023 on CKMS 102.7. Tonight is the year's first ode to 2003, marking 20 years since I started listening to rap music. It feels like a whole lifetime and world away from where we are now -- Bush invaded Iraq, 50 Cent and G-Unit were everywhere, the divide between mainstream/underground was mad deep, I still had dial-up internet, video games were good (sorry for sounding like an oldhead on that one, gaming's in a bad place right now), and smart phones were looming, but not here yet. I didn't even have an iPod! 2003 marked the year I first took interest in rap beyond casual listening, at just 9 years old -- can only imagine what it might have been like if I grew up in a city which sold mixtapes and had high-speed internet lmao.
