A few folks have observed recently that despite being a Christian who works in ministry by way of the Episcopal Church, I don't consider myself a "Christian artist" as a part of the Contemporary Christian genre. This is an intentional choice on my part, as I aim to write more universal and (hopefully) relatable songs that reach and stretch beyond solely my own faith and traditions via the more generic "Singer-Songwriter" genre. That said, I do occasionally write songs that reflect my personal faith and the stories I was raised with. This is one of them.

Malawi Special

The prodigal perfectly proclaims the paradox of the gospel: Jesus dies and is resurrected for us whether we deserve it or not. Like the younger brother, we don’t even have to apologize before our heavenly Father is tackling us in the streets of life with love. And like the older brother, we don’t have to do anything to earn an invitation to the party, save for leaving our judgments and self-righteousness behind. 

Contrary to how we might imagine it, or even experience it, the whole ministry of Jesus isn’t dependent on our deservings, or our abilities, or our morality, or our faithfulness. Instead, it’s all about the God of the good time who is just dying, literally, to share it with us.

A man, two sons, a life that had no wants.
Food a'plenty, pleasures many, anything you’d need or want.
The father was a loving man who wanted nothing more - than to love them.
The older son, the sensible one, was loyal. I’ll do anything you want or need.
The father looked at son number one with eyes of joy - and loved him.

I want to be loved like that; with open arms, with eyes of love & hearts so warm.
A special place where I can laugh and have a meal - a nice warm bath.
A place where my mistakes can be forgiven - a place called home.

The younger son, his eye on fun and adventure
Wanted to get out and see the world.
The father knew the dangers, but allowed it - because he loved him.
So, looking for fun the younger son went traveling, he had everything he’d ever need.
Or so he thought until he caught himself with nothing left - with nothing.

Compared to what I have right now it’s worth it. What’s the harm in trying anyway?
My father’s servants are so blessed, maybe I’ll put him to the test to see if he
Loves me - see if he still loves me.

A place where my mistakes can be forgiven - a place called home.

He dreamed about the home he’d left behind him.
“What I’d give to taste of that again!”
But when his eyes first turned he thought of bridges he had burned, can they still love me?
So he faced the place he once took for granted. See if they can find a place for me.
Much to his surprise, right before his very eyes - he saw that they loved him.
