OVERHEARD - The Woman at the Well

The parable of the Extravagant Father invites us to reflect on our own spiritual journey, recognizing that we may find ourselves in the position of either son or even the father at different points in our lives. When we are like the younger son, God welcomes us back with unconditional love and celebration, never holding our past against us but instead rejoicing in our return. When we resemble the elder son, we are challenged to examine our self-righteousness and resentment, learning to embrace God's expansive grace that extends beyond our limited notions of justice and worthiness. The father's character ultimately reveals God's heart—one that runs toward the broken, celebrates restoration, and patiently appeals to the self-righteous to join in divine joy rather than remain outside in judgment.

A Child in God's Family - March 30, 2025

Little things matter! Everything we do, whether we realize it or not, enfolds us and those near us into a vision of what we might call “the good life.” We are habituated by our habits and rituals toward the importance, or unimportance, of community, friendship, and faith.

How we eat, how we speak, how we spend our time is a very real expression of where we find our hope.

At some point or another we will find ourselves feeling like one of the sons in Jesus' parable. We will yearn for something that isn’t ours, or we will grow angry over perceived slights... But God, the author of salvation, is training us, habituating us, litugizing us, to see the Good News of the Gospel. Like the prodigal father who is filled with nothing but love, there’s nothing we can do to make God love us any more and there’s nothing we can do to make God love us any less.

No matter what we do or leave undone, there’s always room for us at the party.

A few folks have observed recently that despite being a Christian who works in ministry by way of the Episcopal Church, I don't consider myself a "Christian artist" as a part of the Contemporary Christian genre. This is an intentional choice on my part, as I aim to write more universal and (hopefully) relatable songs that reach and stretch beyond solely my own faith and traditions via the more generic "Singer-Songwriter" genre. That said, I do occasionally write songs that reflect my personal faith and the stories I was raised with. This is one of them.

EASTER 2025

The Prodigal Son

A man, two sons, a life that had no wants.
Food a'plenty, pleasures many, anything you’d need or want.
The father was a loving man who wanted nothing more - than to love them.
The older son, the sensible one, was loyal. I’ll do anything you want or need.
The father looked at son number one with eyes of joy - and loved him.

I want to be loved like that; with open arms, with eyes of love & hearts so warm.
A special place where I can laugh and have a meal - a nice warm bath.
A place where my mistakes can be forgiven - a place called home.

The younger son, his eye on fun and adventure
Wanted to get out and see the world.
The father knew the dangers, but allowed it - because he loved him.
So, looking for fun the younger son went traveling, he had everything he’d ever need.
Or so he thought until he caught himself with nothing left - with nothing.

Compared to what I have right now it’s worth it. What’s the harm in trying anyway?
My father’s servants are so blessed, maybe I’ll put him to the test to see if he
Loves me - see if he still loves me.

He dreamed about the home he’d left behind him.
“What I’d give to taste of that again!”
But when his eyes first turned he thought of bridges he had burned, can they still love me?
So he faced the place he once took for granted. See if they can find a place for me.
Much to his surprise, right before his very eyes - he saw that they loved him.
