On a Sunday morning, a mother and father are pushing around their first-born child. (No, he’s not a rebellious teenager.) He’s an infant in a navy blue stroller.

The father is proud. The mother could be happy. It’s hard to tell because her movie star good looks are always accompanied by a ravishing smile.

She really is happy. At the same time, she is almost aware of why despite having every reason (in her mind) to be happy, she feels subdued and always at least a little sad…  

The child is infinitely curious.

They pass a church. Music by J. S. Bach is playing. As they move away from the music, the baby starts to cry. The parents Inuit that their son wanted to hear more. So they go back to the church. The baby stops crying. He manages to raise his three month old head.


The boy’s childhood is loving. 

Once it confused and frightened him. He was playing under the kitchen table, when his father came home and started yelling at his mother. He was too young for words, but he felt he wanted to protect her. He felt powerless. An instant of the fascinating, powerful Bach “Toccata” flashed through his mind. Although it also frightened him, he felt on a pre-verbal level that its power might be transformative. It was many decades before he was able to understand or even recall this early memory.

The next few years are uneventful. Things return to the usual loving, warm family life. Sometimes, although he could not yet articulate it, he feels a bit lonely till his sister is born. This makes him happy.

I use open source tools and familiar favorites to create one shot recordings around samples when I hear them, but these sounds sometimes need the DAW raw. Sometimes I make my DS do it, sometimes just live on strudle. Sometime a few old phones pretending to be DS korgs. Overall its about depth and layers. Tracks will be ascending order new to old

M. and M. M. are from Juilliard. He also earned an M.B.A. at NYU's Stern School of Business.

Mr. Lieberson has also written two novellas, dozens of short stories and hundreds of poems.  He illustrated some of these.
