Programming has been presented as a way for students to learn mathematics. In his licentiate thesis, David Taub challenges this idea by investigating if and how it works. In his study, groups of Swedish secondary school students, most of them novice programmers, were observed and interviewed as they conducted programming tasks in the classroom.
The findings indicate that although it seems possible for the act of programming itself to help students construct new mathematical concepts, it is unlikely to be an effective classroom strategy. In our conversation, David explains that the cognitive difficulties novice programmers encountered when writing programs became an obstacle to learning new mathematics as well as dramatically increasing the time needed to complete apparently simple tasks.

My Own Evolution

JitterHeart is an acousmatic work that explores how AI can reimagine traditional musical notions of the score, performance, and expressivity. In this piece, I use the Max MSP programming environment in conjunction with Jitter (Jit.GL) to create a self-regulating, quasi-organic audiovisual system. The core material stems from a StyleGAN3 neural network I trained at the Yale Center for Research Computing (YCRC), using an ethical dataset composed entirely of frames from my own digital music scores. The resulting AI- generated video is not merely representational – in a sense, it becomes a new score itself: the “heart” of the piece, the motor for both its sound and structure – the difference being that this score is read in a completely different way.

Rather than interpret the video visually, I process it technically. Jit.GL extracts its pixel-level data into four dynamic matrices – like the pulsating chambers of a heart – converting the video into long lists of numbers. These are mapped to musical parameters such as frequency, resonance, envelope shape, articulation density, and velocity. The video’s abstract jitteriness becomes a kind of LFO constellation – a network of oscillators – governing the sound in ways that feel both organic and alive.

The composition’s harmonic and timbral structure is shaped by a custom-built polyphonic subtractive synthesizer I programmed within Max, using noise as the foundational signal – conceptually echoing the visual noise matrices typically used as generators in Jit.GL. Its behavior is refined by a “modalizer–microtonalizer” module I developed this semester for spectral control. I quantize this filtered pink noise using scales, and further sculpt it with delay, reverb, and sequencing tools. The audio processing mirrors the structure of the video –turbulent, layered, yet precise and self–contained.

The idea of the score is further expanded in this piece through a new mode of “reading” and extracting musical information: a data-rich object interpreted and generated by machines from its prior incarnation as a man–made symbolic system for human musicians. In JitterHeart, the score becomes both performer and performance – simultaneously visual archive and generative code. By giving the video agency over sound, JitterHeart poses a speculative question: what if a score could not only instruct performance, but become it, pulsing with its own synthetic jittery heartbeat?

About me:
Daily, I work as a strength & conditioning coach in Germany and a specialist in biohacking and doping worldwide. In 2017, I graduated with a Master's degree in Sport and Exercise Science, and over the years, I have accomplished multiple courses in endocrinology, physiology, and neuroscience. I'm also an actively competing powerlifter and a lover of heavy metal and forest hiking.

Powerlifting, audio engineering, and biology have been my greatest passions for years. In 2011, I came across neural entrainment and subconscious programming, and at this very moment, I became engrossed in these unpopular branches of science - no wonder; they turned out to combine my interests, while their vast biohacking potential could optimize my performance in various life aspects. Consequently, I meticulously studied and attended lectures oriented on neuroscience, focusing on the functioning of the subconscious mind and the impact of auditory stimulation on living organisms. Using an EEG device, I also had the opportunity to examine brainwaves thoroughly and first-hand, investigating the influence of binaural beats and subliminal messages on the body and mind and uncovering affinities with physical substances. After four years, I began creating binaural beats, focusing on their application in sports. Testing them with friends and protégés, they proved to be an extremely potent performance enhancer, encompassing the potential to actively and deliberately modulate the brain functions in favor of the listener. The first successes inspired me to delve further into research and increase efforts to enhance the efficiency and selectivity of my neural engineering programs. In December 2017, I officially released one of them publicly - Trenbolone Frequency.
