Progressive Paths - Part Nine

Shades of Red | Diggin In The Crates | Progressive House Classics

It has been a dream of mine during my DJ career to play for Promise and warm up for an event Richard Tulip was playing at. This is my "home" sound.

Without the likes of Richard Scott Bradford and Tony Hutchinson playing at Promise & Shindig at Foundation every week, I wouldn't have been inspired to play the way I do. 

I either wouldn't have been a DJ at all, or a different sound may have taken to me entirely if I had grown up a few years later. 

This is my personal collection of music which takes you to what first inspired me on the dance floor. In 2002-3 I would get low quality downloads off Napster/Kazaa to listen back to at home and it was all about this sound for me. I used to attend Trance events only to discover this music was often the warmup but the feeling it brought out of me would open me up and get me moving when I wasn't a natural dancer. 

Special thanks to Mojaxx for recording a video of this using a handy new piece of tech (more on that later) and for all the kind words from the dance floor and other DJs. You could tell I was having as lovely a time as you all were! 

PS. The 2nd last track was actually a new promo from UnbrokenOne who's an up and coming producer in Hexham near Newcastle. Thank you Damien for sending me that - it went down very well!

Progressive House: Classics - Vol. 1

This is the second volume in my series of progressive house classics sets and contains some of the greatest records ever made.

Please forgive the short transition from Belfunk into Heatsink - Belfunk is such a quiet recording that I had to boost it way up and the second part of that mix had to be cut out as it recorded some monumental glitches. 

There’s also a few little pops and crackles here and there caused by pushing the trim levels on some of the older tracks up to the volume required. I’m amazed at how great they still sound after all this time.

Born in the hot summer of 1979, I grew up in the center of The Netherlands. At the age of 12 I discovered the wonderful new genre of House music. Still a schoolboy, I used all my pocket money to buy cassette tapes of famous Dutch house compilations like Move The House, Turn up the Bass & House Party. In the following years several new subgenres emerged, in which the melodic ones were my favourites. That means lots of Eurodance, and instead of the popular Dutch Hardcore, I chose for German Rave and Hardtrance. That combination of powerful beats with lots of melodies was golden and formed my music taste.

Some years through genres like Dream House, Club Trance and the famous Pizzicato house followed and the first Trancemaster! CD’s were collected. And then the year 1999 came, I discovered a strange imported English mix compilation called Gatecrasher:Wet
It contained a wonderful combination of trance tracks from all over Europe. At that moment I started to save some money for buying my first turntables. When I bought my first 2 belt drive turntables and a basic mixer a new world opened. The world was far less international so it was quit a challenge to get those gems from abroad. In 2005 this trance addiction was expanded with producing my own tracks with the then brand new FruityLoops software. Exploring all ranges of trance music my production portfolio is very diverse, like all the different music styles I like to play. 

Being a bedroom producer and DJ for many years my collection grew to about 2500 records ranging from deep progressive house to hardtrance. Around 2007/2008 vinyl records stopped being the main medium for electronic music and things were getting all digital. Missing the fun part of buying and spinning part of records, together with a changing sound of trance made that spinning music was not on my highest rank anymore. But although not too active, this was the period that I discovered harmonic mixing, which still forms the base of all my mixes. By combining the harmonies of different tracks, my mixes are full of homemade mash-ups and by using the harmonic mixing wheel I try to make one continuous journey through harmonies.

In these years my turntables and record collection were gathering dust. I still followed the trance scene sideways and made an occasional mix (with Virtual DJ) or track. In 2018 something changed. I decided to go to a trance festival again after 15 years, so me and my friends made a trip to Luminosity Beach Festival 2018. I was overwhelmed by the fact that this scene was so much more alive than I expected. Especially the fact that there were so many DJ’s that still played those classic trance tracks. Inspired by those sets I decided to upload some of my older mixes on my SoundCloud page for all those classic trance lovers. 

In the past 4 years I created my own themes for my mixes, some modern ones but lots of classics. For example my yearbooks in honour to those golden years of trance. My Exhibition of Classic Trance does reflect my personal taste the best, those mixes are always more than 3 hours to ensure a complete journey through different styles of trance. My personal favourite series is Hidden Treasures, which completely consists of all those hidden gems from back in the days. Of course I love the obvious classics, just as much as all trance lovers, but mixes with only the well-known classics are sometimes a bit exchangeable. With these hidden treasures I can let people discover tracks they never heard of and be more unique. It’s my pleasure to provide you all with a broad range of trance music.

UK based Co-founder of PROGRESS:ON. DJ and Event Promoter. In 2024 Nasser has relocated from living in Cyprus to his hometown in Newcastle. During lockdown his live stream series “Melodicast” grew into an exciting gathering of music lovers on Youtube, and when events opened up this became a sunkissed 3 year DJ career across the beach bar, nightclub and festival events based along the Mediterranean coastline, which has further curated his style today.

Nasser’s personal taste is inspired by the connections he made with strangers on the dancefloor when a special moment is felt together –  which he believes is only achieved with phones away so we are present with one another.

He is one of the first promoter DJs in the U.K. to bring regular daytime electronic music events to clubs and outdoor spaces in his hometown. Celebrating it’s 5th birthday this year, PROGRESS:ON, has uncovered a niche of people of all age ranges who want to party in the day and remain ready to take on tomorrow. Nasser’s event was born from moving into a house where he could throw house parties with loud sound systems, and they attracted so many people it eventually had to go public.

Today Nasser serves DJ Mag's favourite clubs including Guaba (Cyprus), Digital, theCut and World Head Quarters (Newcastle), and a recent highlight BEONIX Festival & Sunset Tribes Festival in Larnaca.

Nasser is growing an international electronic music following. His cross-genre journeys through rhythmic, bright and vibrant sounds are influenced by the basslines of Serge Devant, the grooves of Jimpster & Marlon George to the energy of Butch, Josh Butler & Nick Curly. 

Nasser regularly DJs at festivals and venues in the UK and across the Republic of Cyprus for GUABA, KESH, AGORA ROOFTOP, NOA BEACH and BEONIX FESTIVAL and throwing intimate terrace parties in Newcastle UK under his event brand PROGRESS:ON. 

When not DJing in-person you can catch him live streaming in front DJs and music lovers worldwide on youtube, growing awareness for artists, labels and enabling everyone to discover brand new releases from rising stars in the scene.
