WHY I CRY AS I LAUGH

One night as I laughed 
at that couple on TV
they suddenly turned to me
and with their icy eyes, said:

Why do you laugh as we argue?
What’s so funny about 
two people constantly fighting?

In that moment, I realized a secret
that I then shared with them:

“Those silly battles you engage in
  echo my own inner conflicts.

“So when I laugh at you
  I’m actually laughing at myself.
  Allow me this release, please—
  I need to laugh, otherwise I’ll cry
  at my failure to create peace in my heart.”

The ice in their eyes then began to melt.

But as they wept for me
they also wept for themselves,
knowing now how 
all those battles on the show
echoed their own unresolved inner conflicts.

Seeing their grief
I could no longer hold back—
I wept for all of us, I wept
until I realized 
we could drown in that deep dark blue. 

So then I found a reason to laugh 
as I cried—
yes
I chuckled, I guffawed, I chortled.
“How absurd!” I said to my companions.
  I want to heal the world
  but can’t even heal my own head.”

The couple then began to laugh with me.
We laughed as we cried.
And in that way
kept ourselves from sinking 
down into darkness.

Since that episode
the couple have stuck to the script
and continue to bicker every week
over every little thing.

But now as I laugh at them I also cry:
I allow myself to laugh 
because the relief lifts me up.
But I also allow myself to cry
because when I grieve this war
I become even more determined
to create a lasting peace in my purple heart.

This episode focuses specifically on  our relation to time and the times of past, present, and future. Foolish people don't appreciate the present, because they focus too much on the future that may never come about. They also don't make good use of their memory of the past to continue enjoying things and experiences that are no longer here, Alternately, they ruminate on bad things from the past, keeping them moored in bad memories.  The wise live a life that integrates past and present productively as they move into the future.

We paint our hidden selves thick on strangers' skin, tattooing our fears on 
their flesh. Jung's most unsettling insight: what you hate most intensely 
in others is often your own disowned quality reflected back. In the ballroom 
of projection, we tango with demons dressed as strangers. "Look how perfectly 
their flaws match our deepest wounds." Next time someone repulses you, ask: 
what part of ME am I seeing in them?

The Other’s Face   (Lyrics)

We paint
our hidden selves thick
on strangers’ skin,
while shame-dark tears collect
behind their eyes like bitter mirrors—
each reflection shows back
what we refuse to own.

The dance hall pulses with shadow-ghosts,
their heavy feet drumming up
rhythms of recognition and blame.
Every face we hate holds our truth.

Each gesture reveals another self-denied:
that wild laugh we swallowed,
that rage we buried deep,
those hungers we dare not name.

In the ballroom of projection,
we tango with our demons dressed as strangers,
tattooing our fears on their flesh
until their features twist
into monsters of our making.

What gargoyles we chisel from denial’s stone—
our own face emerging
in each grotesque grin.

Our hatred spins through mirror-halls,
ricochets off walls of who-we-think-we-are,
until it nests beneath our ribs, a dark bird
feeding on everything we claim not to be.

Look how perfectly their flaws
match our deepest wounds—
these strangers wearing our discarded parts
like borrowed coats.

We hunt ourselves in others’ faces
while truth waits behind their eyes,
patient as a new moon,
for us to recognise 
recognise our own reflection.
