Concebida como parte del esfuerzo patriótico emprendido en el corazón de la segunda guerra mundial, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp siempre fue un proyecto "inconveniente": el personaje creado por el caricaturista británico David Low era la encarnación misma de la sandez y adocenamiento reaccionario que había claudicado por anticipado ante el peligro nazi, y, para colmo de males, el gobierno de Churchill no vería con buenos ojos la trama, donde se hacía la crónica de una inaceptable amistad entre un oficial inglés y uno alemán, a través de las primeras décadas del siglo XX.  
Ahora bien, a más de ochenta años de distancia, toda esa polémica —que le costó al director Michael Powell ser ordenado caballero del imperio— palidece  ante la gloria que es el filme mismo, una agridulce (a ratos apasionada, a ratos serena) meditación en torno al paso del tiempo, el cambio de las perspectivas, la forma en que se ama, el apego a la vida y la inevitable renuncia a esta. Finalmente, Powell y Pressburger no estaban realizando una cinta propagandística sino un atrevido manifiesto acerca de la condición humana. De eso y más se habla en este podcast.
