I started writing this song in 2005. I had heaps of ideas while I was holidaying in the United States for three and a half weeks. This one is about my brother-in-law, who married my sister while we were overseas. The lyrics were completed once I had arrived back in Australia, and the first recording of this song wasn't done until ten years later in 2015!  I decided to write it in an Elvis Presley style, but I chose not to imitate the voice of "The King". There were also no swivelling of hips whatsoever, while puttng this song together.  Unfortunately though, the 2015 version of the song sounded way too similar to Elvis's "All Shook Up."  Fast forward to the present day in 2024, and only now have I managed to create a version that removes all similarities to Elvis's hit.  One could say that my song submission for this week has been a good 19 years in the making!

Raimond Beaumont

Miss Elm is a "ukelady" (a lady who plays ukelele) and a former member of I Heart Songwriting Club.  This is where I initially heard of her, and later on I found out that we had mutual friends within the local music scene.  Our paths crossed in person at the launch of her single "Pippi Long" in 2021, and I've pretty much been hooked ever since!  She has such a sweet voice, and her skills on the ukelele are exemplary!  Not only has she played shows all around Australia, but she is also a music teacher for voice and ukelele.  She even ran a group called "The Ukelele Rockers" for a period of time, but these days her focus is mainly on self-care and healing.  This has become a real passion of hers, and can be found online as "The Expression Atelier."  She particularly loves what's known as sound bowl healing, with the shrill tones and frequencies putting you in a calm and relaxed state.  I've actually experienced this myself during BIGSOUND last year, and I came away from that with my mind totally at ease.  For my song submission this week, I'm basing my chord progression two songs by Miss Elm which are called "Clean Slate" and "Pippi Long."  My song's title is a reference to a Bettle Midler album, which was entitled "The Divine Miss M."

The Divine Miss Elm

I first encountered Amber Gunn on an online music collaboraiton site known as Bandhub.  It single-handedly brought musicians together from all over the world, so they could make music with each other no matter where they were!  Amber went by the username "yourmom0814", and most of the other users started calling her "Mom" for short.  Needelss to say, she was one of many users from the United States Of America.  Amber and I ended up doing 20 "collabs" together between 2015 and 2017, and she would always bring unbridled joy and enthusiasm to every project we took on!  We ended up being quite a team, with a lot of our collabs being truly memorable!  There are too many to name, but a few stand out as I watch the old collab videos every now and then.  Sadly we lost contact after we last played music together in 2017, and I do hope we can get back in touch some day.  One of the songs we did together was "Twisted" by Keith Sweat, in particular the version that samples Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing."  This is what my song's chord progression is based on.

"It's Still A Secret" is one of my favourite venues when it comes to taking in live music.  It is a short walk from my hometown's Central Business District, so that makes it all the more convenient.  It may have gone through several changes in name and ownership over the years, but the main premise has always been the same.  Every gig I've been to at this venue has been nothing short of fabulous!  It also helps that it's such a nice place too, and walking through it really makes you feel like you're at someone's house!  It has a real retro vibe, with furniture and other decorations that come straight from the 1970s!  It definitely fits this week's theme "cosy" to an absolute tee!  I am friends with the members of a seven-piece Balkan gypsy jazz band called Greshka, and they play at this venue once a month.  i attend so many of their gigs there, that I have actually been put "on the door" so I don't even have to pay to get in!  I even went to a show of theirs on my birthday last year, and it was a really special night!  For those who are unaware, "Greshka" is actually the Bosnian word for "mistake."  For my submission this week, the chord progression in the verses is based on a song that used to be sung on the children's TV show "Play School."  As for the choruses, the chords follow that of Kylie Minogue's "It's No Secret."

This was originally by first ever co-written song!  It was a parody of the John Denver song "Sing Australia."  When I say parody, I mean original lyrics that are sung to the tune of an existing song.  When my siblings and I were kids, we would have a series of babysitters look after us while Mum was out working at night.  The lyrics for this song were written by myself and one of our regular babysitters back in the early 90s (possibly around 1990).  I remember i was having a bubble bath at the time, and our babysitter locked herself and I in the bathroom as we penned this very cheeky song!  This one was part of a series of parodies that we wrote about each other, and absolutely no-one was safe!  There were tales of working Mums, tantrum days and very naughty kids, just to name a few.  For my submission this week, only the lyrics (with a few tweaks here and there) remain from our parody.  The title has changed slightly, with the chords and melody being used from one of my previous songs for the Club written to the theme "Latitude."

My very first thought for this week was "Natural", so I decided to write to that theme instead.  I also figure that after 12 terms in I Heart Songwriting Club, I consider myself a natural at writing songs every week and refining those skills.  This song is essentially about writing songs.  I originally wrote this in 2004, and the instrumental here is from that initial recording.  I revisted the song recently, and updated the lyrics to reflect the various changes that had happened in my life.  Only the third and fourth verses needed changing, but I chose to re-record all of the vocals.  I must say that I am rather proud of this song, and I especially was when I initially recorded it 20 years ago!  I used a program called FruityLoops (now FL Studio), and at that time it was basically a software sampler and drum machine with no recording features whatsoever!  I ended up using another program to record the vocals, then I imported them into FruityLoops and triggered them as samples.  For this new recording of the song, I used the latest version of FL Studio which does let you record straight into the program!  This is so much easier, in my opinion.

Sizzler was a popular family restaurant chain, and it was certainly a favourite of mine growing up!  My family and I would go there quite often when we were younger, and this was back at a time where you could choose between the smoking and non-smoking sections.  I remember always being adamant and declaring that we sit in the non-smoking section!  Sizzler is perhaps best remembered for its cheese toast, which was always served as an entree to every meal.  You could choose from the salad bar and pasta station, which were all-you-can-eat if you specified that when you ordered your main meal (or you could have the salad or pasta as your main meal if you wanted to).  There were all kinds of choices available for your main course, ranging from fish, steak, seafood, burgers, etc.  Then you could top it all off with a nice bowl of soft-serve ice cream from the dessert station.  I remember making serveral trips to the salad bar, and I would end up with what my brother called "Cheese Mountain."  My favourite main meal was the shrimp fry platter, and of course I couldn't go past two bowls of ice cream to finish!  You could also get drink refills as well, with several soft drinks to choose from.  My song submissions's chord progression is based on that of "I'm Into Something Good" which was made famous by Herman's Hermits.  I chose this song because it was used in some of Sizzler's television advertisements.  I initlaly recorded my piano part in my DAW, but found that it was too slow for my liking.  So rather than redo it at a faster speed, I adjusted the tempo in my DAW and sped up my piano part.  I decided not to use the original pitch of my initial recording, because I quite like the sped-up quality of it.  The vocal was recorded at the faster tempo.  There was a Sizzler restaurant a few suburbs over from where I live actually.  The building is still there, even though it has been transformed into a shop called Pet Barn!  There was a KFC restaurant right near where Sizzler used to be, and the old KFC building is still there too but it has now become a 24-hour gym!

This is a revised version of a song that I wrote back in 2004! It was about one of my workmates at the time, and as I recall I wanted it to sound like the theme song of a cartoon superhero.  This person's name is Jaye Bailey, and we became really good friends over the nine or so years we worked together.  I initially wrote this song about her as if she were a superhero, but then it became about how much I knew about her at the time.  The music and lyrics are from 2004, but the vocals have been re-recorded.  In case anyone is wondering about the spoken words section and the third verse,  Jaye was not and never has been a violent person.  She never did "smash him", with "him" referring to another workmate of ours at the time named Nick.  It sort of became a bit of a running joke between the two of them, even though you probably could not get away with saying that kind of thing in this day and age.  The lyrics have not been updated in the 20 years that have passed, so they are very much a product of their time.

People can be so judgemental in this day and age!  They don't even know you, but they form their own opinions about you regardless if they are true or not!  What do they know though?  Everyone should look after their own backyard, and not care about what anyone else thinks about them!  It took me years to get to this point in my life, and for this I am so grateful!  Do not give a flying fig, and get on with what you like to do with your time!  Verses 1 and 2 are based on actual events, while the third verse is offering adivce to others who may be struggling with judgement from those they may or may not know.  I started off my song with no rhyming structure, but then I introduced one in Verses 2 and 3.  I suppose this is different to how I usually write, which fits in with the guideline rather nicely I feel. This song is a glimpse into what life was like back when I was younger.  Mum worked full-time as Principal Harpist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and retired in 2021 after 47 years in the job.  She has pretty much seen it all as a travelling and touring musician, and has had her fair share of ups and downs over the course of her life so far.  My father left us when I was five years old, so it was basically just her to raise three young children.  She would often work at night with the orchestra, so she called on the assitance of various babysitters to take care of us while she was out.  One of my previous songs this term talked about one of these experiences, and no two babysitters were alike!  Perhaps unsurprisingly, each of them brought their own unique style and had their own way of doing things.  Once when I was in high school, Mum called on one of my classmates to babysit us for the night!  i saw it more as a friend coming over to catch up, and I remember we ended up watching movies together.  For my submission this week, the chord progression is loosely based on the one used in the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.  Just for something different, I decided not to end my song with the chorus.

Protis has been writing music since 1998, when he was still in high school. The name Protis came about from watching the TV show Pokemon; his original name was Piggy, and just how Pikachu evolves into Raichu, well he decided that Piggy would evolve into Protis. The name has stuck ever since then.

Protis is a big fan of computer-based music.  The first computer program he used for music purposes was Cubase Lite on good ol' Windows 3.1 operating system.  Over the years he moved on to Cubast VST, where he further developed his skills as a songwriter.  Most of his early recordings were instrumental works, as at the time he was unable to compose decent lyrics.

After a while, Protis decided to leave the realm of General MIDI and progress into the world of loops and samples.  He accomplished this by using the ACID range of products.  Countless hours were spent with this brilliant piece of software, coming up with lots of cool beats.

Protis has also dabbled in the FruityLoops software, now called FL Studio.  He utilised FL Studio to write songs which contained his first self-penned lyrics.  He was surprised at just how well his lyrics came across in each song, fitting in well with the music.  And all this from someone who could never write words to his songs!
