Proto dance and (out of) body music for the bad people of Wrong Party - a taste of things to come on the 27th.

Certain parties leave an impression and playing Wrong Party last Christmas did that for me - they are a very up-for-it and open-minded crowd, a combination to be highly treasured!

They aren’t house, they aren’t techno, they aren’t disco - they are all the cracks in-between where the Wrong ’Uns like to have their fun. Safe to say I’m very much looking forward to playing at the Xmas Perineum Xtravaganza again - see you on December 27th.

Time to dip into the pre-SoundCloud era for Interbay, as another Monday means another RRR (Rethink, Remake, Remix) of a track that originally debuted as a music video on Facebook in 2023.  After staying in the very earliest for these RRR mixes for the first few, we're jumping all the way up to Experiment 88, which, in this RRR version, will be known as "Motorik Roll."  

This is a Motorik-style song about Motorik beats and songs/bands that utilize them.  If you've never heard the term "Motorik" before, this song will teach you.  If you're already familiar with "Motorik" then this song should put a smile on your face for how meta it all is.  

"Motorik" is a term most associated with "krautrock"--the experimental bands of the 1970s coming out of Germany, like Can, Neu!, Kraftwerk, and plenty of others (many of whom are named in LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge" as being influential on where music would evolve to include in the next decades..  

I understand that some people feel that the term "krautrock" is offensive--I'm not meaning to offend anyone by using them.  There doesn't seem to be another word to describe what I'm trying to describe here.  

I should also note that the Kraftwerk being included here is less the electronic minimalists that they are best known for being--but the earlier version found on early albums Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk 2, Ralf & Julian, and Autobahn--those first three of which have basically been disowned by Kraftwerk as non-canon experimentalism in a more rock-ist direction.  Indeed, in these early days future Neu! drummer Klaus Dinger (one of the performers who has helped to define and describe what is meant when music critics discuss "motorik beats") was a contributing member to a far more conventionally instrumented--though certainly still as adventurous--version of Kraftwerk.  

The video for Interbay's Experiment 88, which can still be found on Facebook, incorporates live footage of this early version of the band from Winter 1970 (as shared by Rockpalast)--it may be the first time that the band was ever broadcast.  I am very fond of this footage--despite my using it to share Interbay music with it, homage or not--as the journey from hipster cool to confusion to enthusiasm that the live audience experiences is particular delightful.  (As is Florian playing the flute and Ralf playing a rare tube synth.)  

I'm not saying that Interbay is anything like Kraftwerk, Can, Neu! or any other band that could be lumped into the "krautrock" genre..merely that this track was always meant to pay homage to the sounds that would develop into the sounds that Interbay would be most influenced by--both on the post-punk side as well as the dance side.  

With the addition of some vocal elements, some eq and fx tweaking--and a cheeky easter egg for those who speak German (slightly given away by the new name this track's been given)--I'm proud to share this Interbay experiment with you as a proper Interbay SoundCloud track.  

I hope you'll take a listen to this bit of time travel, love signalling and, possibly, cultural appropriation (can one appropriate something based on cultural appropriation?  not sure...)  It is nowhere near as experimental as what it is paying homage to, as it does fit into the category of mutant pop quite well.  (In other words, it's got a good beat and you can dance to it!)
