    Conceived at Taaffe 'Space is the Place', Donny’s infamous loft space. 'Stay Out West' is the collaboration of Kat Smith & Donny Burlin aimed at reviving chillout rooms and other outward-bound dance floors.
     A Baltimore/Brooklyn underground legend, Donny spent years in the trenches of B’more & DC, cementing his reputation for dug-out, genre-free cuts with an encyclopedic knowledge of dance music and show-stealing side room appearances at renown house-leaning institutions.
     DatKat (Kat Smith), half of Analog Soul and a seasoned DJ long before their international success, Kat’s sound is diverse like the duo’s, who routinely split the difference between their own styles, diving into house, techno, dub, disco, drum & bass and the kitchen sink in differing proportions depending on setting.
     Together 'Stay Out West' connects far ends of music history, whether it’s their own bizarre downtempo acid leadoff tune on the Electric Café Vol. 1 compilation, or all night dj. sets of vinyl cuts  in chillout rooms & low key lounges across the globe.

The event took place upstairs in the Glenfiddich and The Balvenie listening lounge where fine Single Malt Scotch Whisky cocktails were served by two of NY's finest bartenders, Ally Marrone (Grand Army) and Takuma Watanabe (Martiny's). M.I.5. signed to the Public Records label owned by Patrick Campbell-Lyons, half of cult symphonic-rock band Nirvana and fashion designer Gloria Satin. They recording tracks at Startling Studios with engineer Keith Byres at Tittenhurst Park, the former home of John Lennon, and RMS Studios, London through November 1979, resulting in the release of the 7″ single, “Alright On The Night” [PUB-002] in 1980. Talked to Vegyn during the vinyl signing the day after his set. Told him I saw him in Korea in 2023 and could never find any recording from the set. He said he likes to keep his sets pretty lowkey. This one is for anyone who was there, or wished they were.

Donny is one of the funkiest dudes to bless the decks! Brooklyn implant by way of Baltimore, a NYC favorited underground party spot, 'Space is the Place’ BKNY curator, Donny became a national staple throughout the 90’s & early 2000’s, and has been playing parties up and down the east coast & nationally for decades.
     Donny has been affiliated with B’more’s first techno/electronic record label, Defective Records (www.defectiverecords.com) since ’94, along with being co-founder/resident DJ of DeepSugar Parties (www.sugarparty.org) with Ultra Nate' at the legendary Club Paradox (www.thedox.com) in Baltimore, MD.
     Donny has always had his ear to the underground and has been influential in keeping the underground vibes alive in Brooklyn.  His musical range runs very deep and is a sure crowd pleaser.

His DJ sets have taken him all over the world from music festivals like SummerStage (Central Park NYC), Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide (France), Cully Jazz (Switzerland), Southern Soul (Montenegro), Terraneo (RBMA/Croatia), Sunsplash; parties like Soul In The Horn, Golden Record in NYC to numerous events in London, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Shanghai, Singapore, Mexico City, Hamburg, Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lisbon, Brussels, Ghent, Liege, Geneva, Sierre, Prague, Bratislava, Vienna, Zagreb, and other parts of the world. 

Rustam is well known for his long 6-8 hrs vinyl sets in New York City. He was a resident DJ at Public Records, Virgin Hotel, Ace Hotel NY & Brooklyn, Lilli Star at Moxy Brooklyn Hotel, Izzy Rose, Studio 151, Nublu, Record Room. He also played records at some of the most important NYC venues like Nowadays, Elsewhere, Jupiter Disco, Le Bain, Black Flamingo, Magick City, Milagrosa, Good Bar, including regular DJ sets at Brooklyn Museum and Rockefeller Center.

He is best known for being the founder of Jazzystan Music Festival (this ran from 2009 in Almaty, Kazakhstan) in his home country. He booked and produced live acts featuring artists like Jamiroquai, Incognito, OMAR, Marcos Valle, Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, LEFTO, Nubya Garcia, EZRA Collective, Kyoto Jazz Massive feat.
