Seattle-based Alternative R&B/ Electro-Soul artist FEM du lit will unveil their latest single, “BANKRUPT,” on Friday, January 31st. A smooth, spiritually cathartic track, “BANKRUPT” explores the disillusionment of chasing the American dream while striving for a life of simple joys. This fourth single from FEM du lit’s upcoming debut album, STIGMATA (due February 28, 2025), is a poignant reflection on the struggles of investing in artistry under the weight of end-stage capitalism. 

“BANKRUPT” is more than a statement—it’s an experience. With Lily M Tahar’s laid-back, perfect in the pocket drum fills, Zora Seboulisa’s vivacious bass grooves, and a captivating saxophone feature by Obsvdian (Xiomara Mills-Dupree), the track exudes both movement and meditation. Its rich harmonies and FEM du lit’s emotive vocal performance conjure echoes of Lady Wray, SWV, and Stevie Wonder, seamlessly blending vintage soul with contemporary R&B.


BANKRUPT (Single)

Dubbed the “barn burner” of our live set we felt the need to write a quintessential soul tune reminiscent of the ‘60’s classic hits for this one. The lyrics and music came rather quickly once the concept of stealing someone’s heart was established. We knew the rhythm section needed to be solid and subtle to get that feel and timelessness of the Motown sound and yet relevant to todays listeners. Once the instrumental tracks were laid down and the lead vocals, we had a ball creating those multi tracked girl group backing vocals. 


The Thief

Singer-producer Francesca Eluhu–artist name FEM du lit (a play on words meaning "woman of the bed")--is a French & Congolese musician based in Seattle, WA. Their music seamlessly pulls inspiration from both their Afro-diasporic heritage and an eclectic range of influences from Radiohead to Moses Sumney. Known for being the front-person to Seattle's psychedelic neo-soul band, Day Soul Exquisite, Francesca ventures into an alternative/indie, electro-soul sound for their solo project, FEM du lit. Music to be released on Eluhu's La fem records.
