Go-Go music is the official music of Washington, DC. "In the Pocket!," uses original funky grooves and the African call-and-response to have children experience the infectious energy of a live Go-Go that is nonstop, crankin', and fun music.

This album replaces the 2022 album with an updated version of Little Kangaroo in the Pocket and includes instrumentals of most of these songs.

this is a mashup of 'Swing My Way' by K. P. & Envyi & 'Twerk' by Rare Essence that i recorded back in NOV 2024 & forgot to post. go-go gotta forever home in my heart & will always bring me back to my childhood.

as gentrification continues to increase throughout DC, especially within historically Black neighborhoods, the culture of go-go is being tested; many of the transplants who’ve infiltrated these neighborhoods have been pushing to silence and erase the culture of go-go music, street performances, block parties, etc.. a notable incident happened in 2019 when a nearby resident complained to the city about an electronics stores' noise levels. the store would play go-go music from a speaker outside the store that encouraged local community to gather, dance, and enjoy each other's company. with no luck from the city, who said the noise levels were ok, the resident continued to call the stores ownership to escalate their complaint. ownership complied, and the city responded. the hashtag turned petition 'Don't Mute DC' also emerged, gaining over 80,000 signatures to return the music, alongside daily gatherings & protests outside the store. after several days, ownership doubled back & the music returned.

Don’t Mute DC has grown into an organization, led by activists Ronald Moten & Natalie Hopkinson, dedicated to battling Black displacement and cultural erasure in the city. since the incident in 2019, it's opened up conversations about how gentrification has displaced over 20,000 Black Washingtonians, the city’s history, culture, and racial justices. DMDC has already shifted policies in the arts, preservation, health care and education, including restoration funds for local schools, a hospital, and Project Empowerment, a job readiness program. Moten & Hopkinson also contributed to the founding and curation of The Go-Go Museum & Café (which coincidentally opened in November 2024), located in the Southeast neighborhood, Anacostia.

Retro Roland Riso, has over 25 years of club experience behind the decks, with a true passion for all things funky, filled with soul and truly groovy.

As a toddler, he'd spend countless hours enjoying his parents' eclectic record cabinet; listening to artists such as The Beatles, Sergio Mendes, Sly & The Family Stone, The Turtles, Taj Mahal, even The Osmonds and Bay City Rollers.  Little did his folks realize, Roland snagged a few of those gems over the years to add to his impressive collection.  

While fully immersed in listening to music, he began learning piano at 6 years old, which inevitably launched his love to create and produce.

Once considered the "Hardest Working DJ in Philly", Retro Roland was spinning 5-6 residencies on a weekly basis, including a highly regarded internet radio show, "Sounds of The True School".  During his 4 year run, Mr. Riso's guests included Ursula Rucker, The Last Emperor, Rich Medina and Mpozi Tolbert.

He also ran a successful monthly Jazz and Soul Record Show, which was widely popular amongst record collectors, DJ's and producers, including Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff and Quest Love.

Riso also helped engineer Cozmic Cat's legendary Philadelphia party, "Groove Lounge", which brought musicians, vocalists and DJ's a platform to perform in united, rhythmic harmony, which featured a then unknown, Jill Scott.

As an URB Magazine mixtape runner-up, The Soul Provider has shared the bill with incredible performers, including Afrika Bambaataa, Felix Da Housecat, Dubtribe, King Britt, DJ Craze, Vikter Duplaix, house pioneer Robert Owens and the legendary Barbara Tucker.  He recently opened up for Grammy nominated artist, Flo-Rida.

A number of Retro's remixes are in regular rotation on The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show, featured on BBC Radio 6, with funk 45 releases on Matasuna Records.  Plus, Roland hosts a weekly music broadcast, The FunkBro Show, on RadioActiveFM.

Notorious for working the crowd and rocking the dance floor, Riso maximizes every opportunity to drop a funky "Retro Roland Riso" remix, morphing the room into a sweaty, swanky frenzy!
