Originally, I'd named this latest Interbay SoundCloud exclusive track "Lumber"--because that, to me, the up and down analog synth sound reminded me of the act of sawing.  I grew up in a town with a paper mill, surrounded by towns with paper mills...and that has lingered with me to this day.  

I grew up downwind of the local paper mill--moving there when I was five.  I believe that impacted my sense of smell, because while my parents (who also moved there when I was five) hated the smell of the paper mill, my brother (who was born after we'd moved there) used to LOVE the smell--I didn't notice it.  (This has also impacted my sense of taste and frustrated girls I've dated who were into perfume.)  

None of that really has anything to do with today's track--just felt like sharing.  (...and no, that is NOT me in the thumbnail picture.  I'm much older than that.)  

For this track, I kept things simple--kept the structure rather pure (for me, at least.)  As usual, this track takes some very different sonic ingredients (lo-fi drums playing a house beat, active percussion layered in, thick analog synths, just on the verge of distortion electric piano, an electric guitar riff, some Phil Collins-y drum fill moments, and a bunch of oddly funny vocal snippets about...wood.  (Because there wasn't much I could find about "lumber.")  

I should point out that this song isn't "really" as long as the time stamp says it is.  I mean, it IS--the time stamp isn't "wrong" but it doesn't really tell the whole story.  The extra time is mostly taken up with a drawn out delay of a single word that I let ping pong by itself for a rather long time, just as a goof.  (You can probably already guess what word gets that treatment. ;) )  

This track shows the continuing progression in my music production skills, I think.  It sounds a lot better than tracks I made in 2024 (or 2023.)  I mean, it's never going to be a radio hit or a dancefloor filler...but it pretty much sounds the way I was hearing it in my head.  That's kind of the point, right?  ;)  

I think it wood have to be.

Anyway, here's the point in the description when I encourage you to listen to this track (and check out other Interbay tracks in the back catalog), and like it (because I always like learning people like something I've made), and repost it (as perhaps the same people that listen to what you like will like what I make), and share it (if you have a particular friend that you know whould like what I make), add it to a playlist (which means others will discover it, but also, you'll "have" it close by when you want to hear it), comment on it (in case you'd like to give some encouragement or if you have a kindly worded suggestion or critique), and, most of all, to follow the Interbay SoundCloud page (as new tracks are posted EVERY SINGLE DAY so far!)

(Please excuse any fragmented phrases or misspellings in this description--I am currently hopped on goofballs...because I have a dental appointment today and I'm dentalphobic.  Who knows what I'll find later when my head clears and I read what I've tried to write, right now.)  

"BEHOLD!!!"

You wouldn't think so just from listening to this track--but this track was inspired by hearing an LCD Soundsystem track I hadn't heard before (on SiriusXMU).  The result was this--the name being a cheeky play on the band's name is really the only touchstone that links this song to them.  In the end, as always, what I ended up making was...more Interbay.) 

This is a bass-first post-punk rock song...until more and more elements of electronic dance music begin to fill in all of the gaps, but keeping that slightly fuzzy bass guitar front and center.  

Occasionally, you'll hear some wild powerchords that have been processed into noise.  Occasionally, you'll hear how obnoxiously loud I've mixed the hi-hats.  
Occasionally, you'll hear narration educating you on what a light emitting diode is...  

(Did you know that it took an awful long time to develop a blue light emitting diode--so much that some scientists and electric engineers thought it might be impossible to dao.  I learned that from making the song.)  

Up tempo, danceable, occasionally with a sharp edge to it--this is what ALL Interbay songs long to be...only that THIS one got there!

I've got to say, this may be one of the strangest Interbay tracks ever.  

(...and that's really saying something.)  

Other than the spoken word samples, everything else about this song was constructed played and produced by me.  This wasn't a case of finding an intesting guitar riff sample and built a song from that--not that there's anything wrong with that...I've done that before, I'll do that again, I'm sure.  

But this track is just me, exploring some musical ideas...and it turned into some sort of afrobeat jam band bouncy guitar song with some glitchy synthesizers and a tale of nostalgia and the bitter taste of now.  

Who is this for?  Who (other than me) is this track going to appeal to?  
(Good thing I don't monetize this stuff yet, eh?)  

I started with a guitar plugin, as I wanted to make a guitar centric track.  The preset I chose said it was "post-rock".  I know what post-rock is...but did I know how to make post-rock?    

I started playing around with it...and somehow ended up with an arpeggiated guitar part that sounds more like Snuffy Walden's theme for "thirtysomething" than any "post rock" I'd ever heard of...

I then built a drum part up from scratch.  I liked the idea of a four on the floor kick drum while leaving the rest of it somewhat sparse.  

...that was until I heard these rim hit sounds and thought they might give this track a "Bela Lugosi's Dead" feel.  

Then I added the bass...and somehow, everything sounded like Afrobeat.  It was the bouncy bass...and the insistent drum pulse.  I swear that was not intentional or thematic--but it was still kind of cool, so I ran with it.  

I then started adding some synthesizers to thicken up the sound.  Some are just thick deep notes while others skitter and skritch in the background (thus why I gave this a "glitch" tag.)  And there are some dreamy spectral pads occasionally as well.  

What kind of story could this type of music support?  As I joke, my temporary project name for this was "posters on my wall"--making a weak connection with "post-rock".  

...and that started me thinking.  Always dangerous, that.  

What happened to the people that my generation used to celebrate by putting their posters on our wall?  What are they doing now if they're not who they used to be?  Would it be sad for us to know?  Would it make us feel our own mortality?  

Suddenly, I had the image of a bar, empty save for the dutiful bartender and the lonely figure near the end of the bar.  Suddenly, my afrobeat jam band guitar synth glitch bouncer had a narrative like Mr. Bojangles, pushed up to modern day.  

...and yet, it is a happy song?  

Sometimes, I just have to trust that fate and art know where they're dragging me and that the things I make are the things I was meant to make and even if I don't understand it, it has value...and there's a chance that it will speak to someone...and matter.  

So, here you go.  Track #402 in this Interbay music project's SoundCloud Exclusive consecutive track posting streak.  See what you can make of it.

It is Monday, and for the fourth straight Monday, we're digging into the past to unearth a track originally shared on Facebook (before switching to SoundCloud), but having gone through a Rethink, Remake, Remix process to bring it up to the standards of what I post here on SoundCloud.  

This time, a fourth "R" should be added:  "Remaster."  Because the track known as "Experiment 15" was already meeting most of the directives that I've added to my productions that weren't in place when I was posting on Facebook.  It didn't need as much of a Rethink or a Remake as the previous three RRR exclusive remixes needed to post here.

I'll even go a step further.  I think this was the first Interbay track that felt like it could have been a DangerScience track (DangerScience being the post-punk band I was in back in the late 80s early 90s, and the only previous music project of mine that had ever recorded and distributed our original music before.)  I'm not sure if Crash, my former songwriting partner in a couple of different bands, would agree--but the combination of synths, guitars, drum machines and Sci-Fi dialogue snippets sure fits into what we were cooking up back then, in the original Phantom Laboratories.  

(One of the movies with a snippet in this track is the classic "War of the Worlds" from the 50s.  The long planned but never finished second DangerScience album had a track that I had written that was based on samples from that movie--so, there's a direct link from the DangerScience past to the Interbay present.)  

Certainly not nearly as "personal" as yesterday's track (and thanks to those of you who gave "Birthday Wishes" a listen), this is definitely very me...and I'm happy that it took a little dusting off, freshening up, and some power boosting to be able to share it with you here on SoundCloud.

"Our Power (exp15 RRR)" *exclusive remix*

(First off--once again, the algorithm has been unkind to a random Interbay track--yesterday's drop, "Hostilities."  So, if you could give THAT a listen...like it if you do, then come back and check out today's track.  Thanks!)  

A bit premature, this one, yes?  

I mean--it is only September, which means rain here in Seattle.  Plenty of time to enjoy before the icy winds of January come (and even in January, it's not so bad here in the Emerald City.  I grew up in Wisconsin, where they have a word for Seattle winters.  "Unseasonable.")  

This track has been germinating since the heat of summer (felt more in our trip to Wisconsin this year, oh irony.)  I read something about the microgenre of "coldwave" that reframed that term for me by saying that the 1988 song "Julia" by the French band Asylum Party was the purest "coldwave" song ever.  

That song, with lyrics about Winston Smith's idealized but betrayed young lover in Orwell's 1984, is crisp and minimal post-punk, lead bass, some post-punk processed guitar and a keyboard that I can only describe as "petulant" (though you might have guessed that just from knowing they're French) all over the most basic of drum machine presets, which never changes throughout the song--like an early DangerScience track. ;)  If you need a word for the vocals, I'd say "plaintive."  (Can you tell I used to write music reviews?)

I had never heard the song before, never even heard of the band before--but if that's what coldwave is, then I want Interbay to be (among many other things) capable of making coldwave music.    

So, I had a target in mind.  And "January" is what I've come up wth.  And, like every other track that I have an intended target in mind, the end result sounds like...Interbay.  

If anything, there's too much energy in this track.  The drums are actually trying.  It lurches from an oddly awkward beat to almost disco/rock.  The synths are doing a bunch of different things, none of them could be described as petulant (or French, for that matter.)  

I do like the lyrics.  I do think they'd be better if I'd sung them--and I'm adding this to the list of tracks I want to revisit once I get back to being more comfortable singing on Interbay tracks.  

But, I think you can feel the inspiration here (though, you may need to check out the Asylum Party track to agree) and even if it isn't purely coldwave...I like it.  It is a solid post-punk track, at the very least...and a good addition to the (evergrowing) Interbay catalog.  Indeed, I liked it enough to drop it here, in September, rather than store it in The Vault for when it might seem more thematic.

...and I'm sure I'll revisit coldwave more in the future, potentially based on this winter's weather. ;)

"January" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Today's Interbay track is not an RRR interpretation of a previously posted Interbay track from the time when tracks were being posted on Facebook (as today is not Monday.)  

However, it IS a track that dates back to the time when Interbay tracks were being posted to Facebook and not SoundCloud--at least originally.  This is a track that, though an instrumental at the time, I had thought "finished enough" to be waiting for me to make a music video for it so it could be posted to Facebook in early 2024--but it never got that video, so it remained in the Vault.  

I basically gave it the whole "Rethink, Remake, Remix" treatment--but, as this is its debut, it really isn't an RRR.  I added vocals, I rearranged the track, I added some instrumentation--it is very different than the version I thought was "finished."  

This track is definitely an alternative rock/indie rock track with jangly guitars, but there are glitchy synths and even a funky rock part (which has turned into the chorus of the track.)  

The meaning behind the track is all about how we accept so many contradictions in the modern world, the idea of our being our own "modern ancestors" doesn't cause us any cognitive dissonance.  We are digging up, archaeologically, our own era as we live it.  

I definitely get some new wave/post punk/modern rock vibes here--a little bit Athens, a little bit Manchester.  As an old, I definitely relate to this track...and, as I do ALL Interbay SoundCloud drops, I hope you listen to it and like it!
