Getting on the highway
On a dark cold night
Picking up speed
Swerving to the right

Jerking the wheel
Trying to stay in control
My car slips to the left
And plows into the snow

Gripping the wheel
For fear of my life
Spinning in the snow
In the median at night

Headlights glaring at me
Then all I see is white
Wondering if I have died
I wonder if it's my time

The white disappears
And I come to a stop
Completing a 360
And another 90 on top

Screaming at my brother to get out of the car
Fearing it may blow up
Because of the stench
And what happeneded to the car

Adrenaline rushing
Cars begin to stop
Asking if all is well
I assure them it's not

Nobody's injured
But what about the car?
How am I gonna get it out?
And get it back on the tar?

Backing up and rocking
Trying to get back on the road
No luck there
Because of the snow

So I drive down the median
And my brother gets back in the car
Inching up the side
Now stuck worse than before

Tires spinning like crazy
Spitting up snow
My brother gets out
And tries to dig it out

Trying again to get back onto the road
People keep stopping
Asking if I called for a tow
And if not a tow, have I called home?

I tell them no,
I don't want my folks to find out
A few men stop with a tow rope
And begin to dig me out

Unable to hook it up
Scrambling to find a metal bar
Another man stops
To inquire on us and the car

He has a better tow rope
And they look again for a bar
Hooking it up to something by a front wheel
The man that recently showed, decides to pull out my car

Placing the rope on his hitch
He tells me to angle my wheels
And put it in drive
Slowly, he drags me, but all the car does is slide

After a little effort
We finally get it out
Parking it on the shoulder
My worst fear has came out

The blue and red lights
Turn around and head towards me
All I can think about how dead I am
And what's going to happen to me

The trooper shines his flashlight
Right in my eyes
Making me cringe
But this is no suprise

"Are you the driver of this car?
How much alcohol have you had to drink?
It everybody okay?"
I have little time to think

So first I say "yes",
And from the top of my head say "zero",
Later kicking myself for being so dumb,
"Of course, we're all okay"

Shaking from the cold
And the snow on my knees
He asks me for my license
So I quickly comply

Handing it over
I ask if he wants the insurance also
He says, "no it's fine,
just this'll do."

"Now will you'll walk around
To the other side of my car,
Get in the backseat,
So I can talk to you some more?"

I gladly agree
As it's twenty below zero
Be both get in and he asks me
Exactly what happened

I told him that I lost control
And that my tires suck.
"They suck?" he asks
"Yes," I reply, wondering if I'm out of luck

"Why do they suck?"
He asks, doubting me so
"Because I just got the car this summer
And haven't been able to replace them yet"

He gets out of his car
And walks up to mine
Looking at the tires
And what's going on underneath with the guys

Scrambling for my cell
To try and call my mom
I realize my cigarettes are in my coat
And it's illegal for my person to have them on

A 16 year old girl
Taking lessons from an ex
Quickly grabs them
And shoves them down her pants

He gets back in his squad car
And says, "Your tires definitely due suck."
He then gets on his mic
And calls a tow truck

I ask him what's wrong
And he says that they are having problems getting the tow rope off
He then explains that he has to enter this in the computer
Just to say that he was there

He tells me he asked me
If I had been drinking because,
Most times people go in the ditch,
They simply are

I tell him he can test me
But he says it's fine
He can smell alcohol
And my breath hasn't even a hint of wine

But he says my story
About losing control is false
I then ask him what he thinks happened
In spite of it all

"I think you weren't paying attention,
And slid into the ditch."
I'll let him believe whatever he wants
Just cuz I'm a kid

"After they get the rope off,
you can then go."
Shocked in disbelief,
He disembarks to let me out

He opens my door
And hands back my license,
Suprised I didn't even receive a warning
I nonchalantly walk up to my car

The rope is now off
And the officer backs up
I turn off my hazards
And turn my signal on

I get back on the highway
When there is a bit of a break
Wanting to pull out a cigarette,
But since he is following me, I wait





This happened to me less than a mile away from my house in Minnesota on the way to my grandma's at ten at night.  This is the most frightening experience of my life so far.  ~Krystal~
