Le 27 janvier dernier, le pape François qualifiait de « spirale de la mort » le climat de violences entre Palestiniens et Israéliens. Récemment ravivées par les attentats de Jérusalem perpétrés par un Palestinien et ayant causé la mort de sept personnes, et part le bombardement de Tsahal en Cisjordanie, les tensions ne cessent de s’accroitre entre Israël et la Palestine. Plus d’une trentaine de morts ont été recensées côté palestinien depuis le début de l’année 2023. Cette escalade de violences s'inscrit dans un contexte de glissement vers l’extrême droite du nouveau gouvernement de Benjamin Netanyahou en décembre 2022. Cette radicalisation a provoqué un mouvement de contestation massif au sein de la population israélienne en ce début d'année. Néanmoins, les protestations portent à ce jour davantage sur la remise en question de la démocratie et de la justice israélienne que sur la situation qui oppose Israël et la Palestine.

Comment peut-on expliquer ce glissement vers l’extrême droite du gouvernement israélien ? Ce nouveau gouvernement ne risque-t-il pas de remettre en cause les victoires diplomatiques d’Israël, notamment les Accords d’Abraham ? La « solution à deux États » est-elle encore viable ?

Israël / Palestine : vers l'implosion ? Avec Dominique Vidal | Entretiens géopo

In this episode of Exposure Listens, two young women unpack their ideas about young people's vulnerability to online exploitation.

They discuss how fear breeds hate and how young men, feeling victimised by the rising feminist movement, are being driven towards dangerous influencers like Andrew Tate.

They talk about how difficult it is to put radical figures in a box, due to their manipulative characters, and how people like Tate use their power to exploit and indoctrinate their audience.

Liz and Megan debate Tate's radical views and the serious repercussions they pose.

They explore whether radicals, sharing their polarising opinions, need to be removed from the internet. Is censorship the right course of action for public safety or is free speech vital to ensure people can come to their own conclusions?

Since recording this podcast Andrew Tate has been detained on suspicion of human trafficking, rape and forming an organised crime group. In light of this, Meghan and I want to condemn the actions of Tate and point out the danger of radical figures like him. It’s more important than ever to be well informed and to remember that he cannot deny the harm his public presence has caused, no matter what the conclusion of his criminal case.

In the latest episode of the Breaking Cycles of Conflict mini-series, we are joined by Dr Nafees Hamid, Senior Research Fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) and Research and Policy Director for the Cross-Border Conflict Evidence, Policy and Trends (XCEPT) research programme. A cognitive scientist focusing on the social side of cognitive research, Dr Hamid talks us through his work looking at the neuroimaging of radicalised individuals. Questioning the dominant rational actor model, he instead proposes a different approach to understanding what makes radicalised individuals ‘tick’.
 
This research is being undertaken as part of a UK aid funded project called XCEPT, which aims to understand the drivers of violent and peaceful behaviour in conflict-affected populations – and to find solutions that support peace. Find out more about XCEPT at xcept-research.org.

Neuroimaging of Radicalisation

On Local Matters this week, we talk about the risk of radicalization. As public discourse gets more polarized, the path towards a personal radicalization seems to be more accessible. Especially in online discourse, the danger seems to be inherent. For our interview today, Mira Sorrentino has joined us to talk about the digital means of radicalisation. Mira works with the association respect.lu, to keep people from pursuing radical ideologies.
