[0:20:30] There’s a strong dnb scene in Germany, Czech Republic and pretty much everywhere else it seems – nice! Fabio says that Prague is much cleaner than London – nothing’s really changed 20+ years on…
[0:57:40] It sounds like Fabio might have been the first DJ to get his own special version of Don’t Wanna Know. In the end, all the top DJs (except for Mampi Swift?) got their own version.
[1:05:00] Marky made LK (which stands for Liquid Kitchen) in January 2001. Fabio had LK on dubplate for a year before it came out.
[1:10:45] Fabio reckons that Marky’s English is better than Bryan Gee’s haha
[1:11:20] dnb is big in Brazil, and Marky has played a big part in this.

[1:19:20] LTJ Bukem says that the dnb scene in Australia is very strong. Within a year of this broadcast Pendulum will have broken through with Vault.
[1:21:20] LTK Bukem prefers to play sets that are 3+ hours long rather than relatively short sets of an hour or so.
[1:25:00] Even back in 2002 LTJ Bukem was getting hate online.
[1:30:30] “We got inundated with 2 emails” haha
[1:31:50] Interesting to hear about the behind-the-scenes goings on at LTJ Bukem’s label and that artists have walked away from Good Looking Records. “I’ve long since stopped wracking my brains as to why people do certain things”.
[1:34:00] “Holding on to artists is very difficult” – interesting, I would have thought it would have been the other way round and that artists would have never left once they were signed to a label.
[1:34:40] dnb is still a very underground scene in 2002. Fabio doesn’t want it to become mainstream (like garage) with ten dnb tunes in the mainstream charts.
[1:35:50] “Do you think we sell over 100,000 copies of a release!? We don’t even sell a quarter of that!”
[1:38:45] “We’re stronger together”. They reminisce about meeting up with other artists cutting dubplates (presumably at Music House). “Those were the days”.
[1:49:50] Fabio thinks that LTJ Bukem – Horizons is the best dnb tune ever made.
[1:54:30] For all the top DJs music runs their lives. Their passion keeps the scene alive.

[0:52:20] Grooverider wants someone to design a logo for his show. I assume that nowadays this would be really simple – there must be hundreds of websites you can use, AI and so on – but back in 2002 I wonder how easy it would have been? Would you have had to buy Photoshop to design a logo?
[1:20:00], [1:22:20] It seems that ‘Porto Time’ was the working title of ‘Puerto Rico’. Optical explains where the idea for the tune came from and that he heard the sample used in the intro on the radio.
[1:23:55] Grooverider does not say that this is Goodfoot VIP so maybe this is the original version of this tune and at the time of this interview there were plans to release it.
[1:29:45] Ed Rush is about to get married – Grooverider is doing his best not to tie the knot!
[1:38:25] “Nobody else in the world can play that apart from Peshay”. Grooverider was not sure if it would be released (and it wasn’t).
[1:53:20] Because it will be so good, Grooverider encourages listeners to record the next show from the radio. (Also in the show on 2004-03-20 at [1:01:15]). On 2004-10-16 at [1:52:10] Grooverider discouraged people from recording the show.

[0:29:10] Fabio and a few other dnb artists went to a Busta Rhymes gig and were asked to move away from the main stage otherwise Busta Rhymes wouldn’t perform (security thought that Fabio and co looked a bit dodgy and might try to steal Busta Rhymes’ jewellery).
[0:45:30] This was a good time for dnb with few complaints from anyone. Fabio doesn’t really know how to make tunes. He admires the people who know how to use the equipment to make music – this is a good point: it takes real skill and talent to be able to produce tunes.

Strangely, I’ve never heard this tune in a set, I thought that at least DJ Zinc would have played this somewhere…

[0:19:15] Drum n bass has made a comeback. Dance music generally might be doing badly but dnb is on fire!
[0:24:40] Fabio had a nightmare on Saturday: he flew to Edinburgh and found that about 60 records had gone missing. The police got involved and it got messy. He almost got the woman at the airport the sack. He did get most of his records back apart from around 17. He said that it cost around £50 to get one dubplate cut and he had around 80 records in his box(!)
[0:58:20], [1:10:30] Peshay explains why some tunes never get released.
[0:59:20] Peshay’s mum was ill and so he wasn’t ready to make music for around a year.
[1:07:20] Peshay says that You Got Me Burning has sold around 20k copies.
[1:09:20] It took Peshay around 12 hours to write Miles From Home.
[1:19:20], [1:41:10] Peshay and Fabio both believe in creating tunes that will hold up over the long term rather than short-term hits that are memorable for a week or two and then forgotten.
[1:20:40] Peshay and Fabio want to create unique DJ sets that stand out from the others rather than just playing the same tunes as everyone else. Fabio is confused why a DJ would come on and play the same tune that another DJ played just a few minutes before.
[1:22:10], [1:29:40] Phil wants to know if the major players are going to try to crack the north of England again. Fabio’s response: “Listen mate, stop tripping, it’s as simple as that… I’m really sorry about that, I didn’t read that question right, I thought that was gonna be really interesting instead of being a load of crap!”
[1:29:00] dnb is the most versatile music genre.
[1:33:30] For Peshay, having his own label (Cubik) allows him to truly reflect his musical style. They both explain that they don’t create dnb for money, it’s all for the love.
