When James Baldwin died at his home in the South of France in December 1987, the world lost a towering intellect and one of America’s literary giants. He was buried in New York a few weeks later. But what remained in France, and still to this day, are thousands of personal and professional effects connected to Baldwin. Journalist Tony Phillips travels to Provence to discover why these items are stored in an Englishwoman’s home on the Côte d’Azur.

In 2016, Max, a high schooler from mostly Russian-speaking town Visaginas, Lithuania, is interviewed on a radio program. When asked about his dreams, he speaks of a profitable career in Germany. Irina, another participant, hopes for Visaginas to thrive again after its nuclear plant’s closure. She later invites Max to “Točka” (Point), an informal youth space that shapes their identities. In 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forces two friends to rethink their values, identity, and choices.

There were celebrations around the world when the statue of Edward Colston, a prominent figure in the transatlantic slave trade, was pulled down during a Black Lives Matter march in Bristol in 2020. But not everyone agreed it was a step forward for racial justice. How did this act of protest impact those who are fighting against racism in Bristol today? 

This radio documentary revisits the story of Colston’s toppling and goes beyond the headlines to uncover voices and perspectives that were overlooked. Through interviews with community activists, poets and historians, the programme highlights a range of unexpected opinions and personal reflections on the event and its aftermath.

In June 1969 a police raid on a gay bar in Greenwich Village exploded into a night of violent protest. What followed was a week of rioting with pitched battles between the New York gay community and riot police. It was a watershed in gay history which inspired a new militant phase in the gay rights movement. Forty years on, Tom Robinson asks why the word Stonewall still has such a powerful resonance for gay people around the world.

During the 1960s homosexuality was still classified as a mental illness in the US, with "sufferers" subject to frequent victimisation from the police and society at large. As a private members bar, the Stonewall offered a refuge of sorts where gay people were allowed to dance freely together. When police entered the bar shortly after midnight on a hot and humid Friday night in 1969, it exploded in unprecedented fashion.

Contributors include Seymour Pine, the policeman who led the raid; and Howard Smith, the journalist stuck inside when the crowd turned on the police and attempted to set fire to the Stonewall Inn. There are also eye-witness from the rioters themselves and we learn how the rallying in subsequent months led to a sea change in gay rights activism and the establishment of the annual Gay Pride parade to mark the riots.

Also featuring previously unheard archive interviews with late activists Craig Rodwell and Barbara Gittings. And we return to the Stonewall Inn, as it is today, to find out what resonance the word Stonewall has for the next generation of gay people. In 2009 has the battle been won?

Tom Robinson kickstarted his own musical career with the notoriety of Glad To Be Gay and rounded it off twenty years later with an album cheerfully titled Having It Both Ways. He presented new music shows on BBC Radio 6 Music show for 23 years from 2002-2025.
