What if you'd had a longer lockdown than everyone else, as you'd been on maternity leave for 10 months just before?

That would mean 2 years of isolation! November 2019 - October 2022, plus struggling with a new life as a parent, with a transformed body after carrying a fetus for so long(!), only to come out to a new social awareness as you emerged... It started with me laughing too loudly too soon after lock-down in public and the shocked eyes of some nearby toddlers who had only ever known life as in a pandemic.

 I plunged straight into two major art fairs with an audio recorder, Frieze London and The Africa Art Fair, to take the temperature and try to illustrate what this unique perspective was like. Paranoia about breath, coverings, hands, about close conversations. My soundtrack of this new life had been all nursery rhymes and the over-bearing news.

I sing:

"Hand washing hand, our extremities hemmed in, 
Invisible handcuffs stop us reaching out to shake. 
Heartfelt matters muffled in polypropylene, 
Battened-down fibre hatches against fluid and spray. 
The window's now but a furtive checkpoint for nervous venturers."

Fari Bradley is a London-based sound artist and composer who works with the artistic potential of radio. Born in Iran, Bradley has been working as a sound artist since 2012, and was made a Sound and Music Embedded artist in 2013. Bradley has performed live improvisations on London's improv music scene since 2005, with The Resonance Radio Ochestra and noise quartet Oscillatorial Binnage. Her solo performance is informed by her background in both Western and Indian classical traditions, her sculptural fine arts practice and her experience freeform Djing the world over.
