We discuss Latam-GPT, a significant new large language model developed collaboratively by over thirty Latin American institutions, set to launch in September 2025. This open-source AI aims to provide culturally and linguistically nuanced solutions for the region, trained on a diverse dataset including Spanish, Portuguese, and indigenous languages, addressing the limitations of existing global models. The article highlights a broader global trend of regional AI innovation, with similar initiatives emerging in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, signaling a shift away from a monopolistic, English-centric AI landscape.
