Done as an exercise, this chorale is a reharmonization of J.S. Bach's BWV 370 "Komm, gott schöpfer, heiliger geist".  I took the original soprano melody line given to Bach by the church and composed my own harmonization for the other three voices (alto, tenor, bass) as he once did.  I then compare mine to Bach's to learn from the great master.  Of course, nothing and no one compares to Bach.  But I have done this many times and it is a great learning experience.

Little Blue is a song written and recorded by Jacob Collier. As a great admirer of his artistry and a lover of this song, I decided to record my own cover of “Little Blue.” I believe when we cover another artist’s song, it behooves us to add our unique experiences and voices to our rendition. This cover song is quintessential Spirit—from the breathy “huhs” to the “golden chords” as I like to call them (this is the extent of my music theory)—this cover song sounds like me. I also hope it sounds like its source material, “Little Blue” by Jacob Collier. Can you hear the resemblance? Cover songs in my practice are relatives instead of identical (or even fraternal) twins.

I have a special connection to the personification of Blue after having a dream of a blue being in 2018. I even wrote a song about it not long after. Unbeknownst to me when I began this cover, little moments from my song “The Dream of Blue” make cameo  harmonic appearances. 

My honest thoughts as I sit and write this: the song is about a quarter of the way finished. It’s Wednesday, November. 27th, the day before Thanksgiving. My big sister is in labor with twins. I feel a world of possibility before me.

With the birth of my twin nieces, a portal is now open and our lives are forever changed. I ask myself how will I walk in this New Earth? I believe this time I’ll spread my wings and fly. There is a learning curve involved, but I’ve always been a quick study and an eager pupil.

I’ve always loved to learn.

From Jacob Collier I’ve learned an endless well of creativity is meant to pour out, not to be sequestered far beneath the earth.

I’m gathering my courage to break through once frozen ground. 

I wonder if anyone will listen to this song. I wonder if anyone will like it. I must say I adore it. The people who are here to walk this earth alongside me will adore it, too. Sometimes I question if anyone ^is^ here to walk with me musically. I remind myself that no one is here to walk alone.

My wish as I write this is to have one listener genuinely connect with this song.

And you know what? 

It counts if that person is me.

My friends and I got to make this beautiful video of O Come Emmanuel. We are so excited to share our musical take on this ancient hymn with you!  Sit for a moment, take a breath, and enjoy. As we look to Christmas, we are reminded how we are still waiting for the healing of all that is still broken. We hope and we long for healing. God, we need you. Dave Edwards is a New York–area musical director and multi-instrumentalist who appears to move effortlessly between jazz, rock, classical, and worship music. Decades of ensemble experience and deep study have made him a rare performer and collaborator on upright and electric bass, drums, piano, acoustic guitar, and voice - especially as a worship leader.

He has performed or recorded with Gloria Gaynor, KANSAS, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, The New Jersey Symphony Chamber Players, The Ed Palermo (Frank Zappa) Big Band, John Patitucci, Oz Noy, Mike Stern, and Randy Brecker, with appearances at Lincoln Center, Birdland, CBGB’s, the White House, and the United Nations.

Trained from an early age at the American Boychoir School, Dave was later mentored by conductors John Kuzma and Mark Laycock. Classical training formed him as a young musician, but he couldn’t escape the pull of jazz and classic and progressive rock, especially on drums and bass. He eventually joined the Princeton High Studio Band, performing Whiplash on bass and drums, and earning awards for Outstanding Bassist and Drummer at Berklee’s national jazz competition with the first-place Studio Band - the same band and song that inspired the film Whiplash.


He went on to study piano performance and conducting at Indiana University, performing with the Trenton Symphony and Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra, before turning to jazz studies inspired by his newfound love for small group ensemble playing. Dave continued to engage in classical performance as pianist and assistant to conductor Murry Colosimo of the Wayne Chamber Orchestra in Wayne, NJ.

In the Christian music world, Dave has worked alongside Kathy Troccoli, Gary Chapman, and Wayne Watson. As a featured worship leader, Dave served at events alongside John Ortberg, Luis Palau, Tim Keller, Rick Warren, N.T. Wright, Francis Chan, and John Piper.

As a recording artist and session player, Dave’s drumming and bass work appear in sample libraries and licensing collections including Big Fish Audio’s Vintage Big Band, Funk/Soul City, and Vegas Loops, as well as TV and film scoring projects.

Drawn by faith in his twenties, Dave began what has become a 30-year career as a Worship & Arts Leader, mentoring over 120 musicians and technical artists known for their musical excellence, camaraderie, and authenticity.
