Episode 154: The sun is shining

The River Lee is a magical place. Herons, seals, cormorants, tidal waterfalls and beaches exist alongside record shops, cafes, cargo ships and extensive traffic jams. The city is both encircled by the river and also revolves around it. On the walk from the Port of Cork on the east of the city, through the bustling city centre, and out to the leafy and wild Lee Fields we take a wander and chat to the locals to find out their favourite things about Cork in 2025.

Field recordings and interviews conducted between the 5th and the 10th of May 2025.

Climate Stories Ambassador, Valerie Esposito, descibes the seasonal beauties of a natural area near her home in Burlington, VT. She speaks about the increasing frequency of devestating 100-year floods due to the changing climate, and the economic and social effects the floods have on the local area. As a professor of sustainability, she tries to instill a sense of hope and possibility in her students and in her community to help people envision a future where humans and the Earth can thrive.

éist is a volunteer-run internet radio collective based in Cork city, Ireland.

We are dedicated to fostering creativity, collaboration, and community engagement through DIGITAL RADIO.

I am passionate about playing with sound. I have my go-to styles, but I'm not afraid to explore different genres and try something new. In my home music studio, I craft my music masterpieces using my trusty tools, and the Yamaha Genos 2 is my go-to muse when I'm trying to come up with catchy tunes. 

I usually start with a rough draft, sometimes using a chord chart to help me find and arrange the chords. I rely on ChatGPT to help me craft the lyrics, especially since English isn't my first language, and I want them to sound smooth and effortless. It helps me experiment with different ways of saying things, organizing my thoughts, and exploring different ideas, but the final lyrics always come from my heart and show who I am as a songwriter. 

To complete the project, I prefer using Cubase as my digital audio workstation (DAW) for the final touches and fine-tuning. However, I often switch to Pro Tools for mixing. I like to keep things interesting, so I don't limit myself to just one style - it all depends on how I'm feeling creatively.

Because I'm not a professional singer and don't think my voice matches the songs, I use artificial vocals to make my music sound just right. I don't see this technology as a way to take shortcuts, but as a tool that allows me to express my musical ideas in new and exciting ways, just like synthesizers or virtual instruments.

Climate Stories Project (CSP) is an educational and artistic forum for sharing personal stories about the effects of climate change on our lives and communities. CSP focuses on personal oral histories, which bring an immediacy to the sometimes abstract nature of climate change communication. Some of us may recount dramatic events such as floods and wildfires, or we may address our observations of changes in seasonal patterns and our fears for the future of our families and communities. We may discuss how climate change is forcing our communities to adapt to extreme weather and sea level rise. Or we may speak about how we are getting involved in the movement to fight the fossil fuel industry through community organizing or nonviolent protest.There is no "right" way to talk about climate change, as it is a vast topic that is increasingly touching every corner of our lives. CSP also facilitates educational workshops where students learn to speak about their own responses to climate change and interview guest speakers about theirs. In addition, some climate stories are featured in music and soundscape projects that allow audiences to witness the effects of climate change in a novel way.
