Writer-director Robert Eggers, whose reputation for aesthetically rich, deeply-researched and idiosyncratic horror precedes him, has long been working on a remake of F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu, the 1922 German Expressionist classic whose influence has been felt in the horror genre for a century. It's a big fish to try to take down, but it's source material that feels like it exists especially for him - how does he do?

Very well, as it turns out... although, in classic fashion, we manage to talk around what a fantastic time we had by concentrating on our criticisms. Ignore them until you've taken yourself to the biggest cinema you can to see it - it's an experience you should have. Then come back and listen to us discuss the debt Eggers' Nosferatu owes to the colour tinting processes of the silent era, how the second half gets bogged down in tropes and plot, the delineation between sex and love, the pressure to be accessible, whether horror needs to be scary, and the important lesson we learned from Shrek Forever After.

#784: Post-Vacation Nosferatu Review

Philip and Lara discuss the new film from Focus Features and Robert Eggers, a remake of the 1922 German silent film 'Nosferatu.' Eggers brings his signature austere style to this classic Gothic horror story, originally an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula.' Key details were changed from the book, but that didn't stop the original film's legacy from being threatened by the forcible destruction of all prints due to copyright infringement. Thankfully the film lives on and Max Shreck's iconic portrayal of the corpse-like Count Orlok would go on to inspire generations of vampire enthusiasts. Bill Skarsgård provides a unique take on Count Orlok as he haunts and seduces his unwitting victims, such as the newlywed Thomas and Ellen Hutter and their friends Frederick and Anna Harding. This dark, atmospheric film evokes the previous works of Eggers whose obsessive attention to detail transports you to 1830s Germany, where the fear of plagues and sorcery were ever-present, often requiring tremendous sacrifice to thwart the evil that infects the world. "Nosferatu" has long been a passion project for Writer/Director Robert Eggers for many years. That dream has now become a reality with one of 2024's most impeccably crafted films, which has scared up over $100 million at the box office and has become the most commercially successful film of Eggers's career. The team at Next Best Picture was lucky enough to get some time with a few of the film's extraordinarily talented crew members as Oscar nomination voting continues. 52. Nosferatu with the most-feratu

A chant-like whisper, an incantation spoken in an unknown language suggesting the shadows of the occult lurking nearby. What demon or spirits may be called upon here? What winds of darkness envelop us, drowning us in this surreal space?
Actually, it is just a prayer from my childhood in my Swiss dialect: "Liaba Heiland chomm zu mir, mach a fröhlichs chind us mir. Amen, dangga." ("Dear Lord please come to me, make me a happy child. Amen, thank you.") 
Ellen's lonesome yearnings for a companion, for comfort, in the latest adaptation of Nosferatu (2024) reminded me of that very plea for happiness I would repeat every night with my hands clasped and hope in my heart. I was a happy child, so I reckon it worked out better for me than for poor Ellen Hutter.
This piece is inspired by Robert Eggers' Filmography and his collaborators in film music, Robin Carolan and Damian Volpe. It includes multiple synthesizers, acoustic bass patterns, guitar tuning, busy rattling sounds and something I like to call "DeathBreath" (breathing heavily into the microphone and reverbing the hell out of it), all created by me.

Rosie Marie Brown was started in 2022 as the solo project of singer-songwriter Isabelle "Rosie" Brown (CH/USA), born in the mountains of the quaint Rhine Valley. Her songs are candid letters that have not been sent, the soul-stripping, fearless expression of a chronically introverted human being. Deeply influenced by all matters of Rock, 70s Folk and Indie artists, Rosie's music can be described as indie-inspired folk, silently pregnant with the blues. Sometimes melancholic, sometimes angry, sometimes sad, always captivating. In 2024, her partner Tom Bensley (AUS) joined on the Bass Guitar and the two are currently working on more songs.
