Fictie over klimaatverandering is een redelijk nieuw literair fenomeen als antwoord op wat misschien wel de grootste uitdaging van onze samenleving is. Podcastmaker en voormalig senior bibliotheekmedewerker Heleen neemt ons mee naar de wondere wereld van Klimaat Fictie en komt met een aantal mooie boekentips.

Climate change fiction (Cli-Fi) – Podcast #25

In deze podcastaflevering verwelkomt Team pLESStic! Rogier De Nijs, een veelzijdige drummer en componist die zijn talenten heeft uitgestrekt over diverse muziekstijlen, waaronder rock, pop, klassiek, jazz en improvisatie. De laatste jaren houdt hij zich vooral bezig met zijn eigen composities en zelfgemaakte instrumenten uit afvalplastic en werkt hij graag aan zijn muziekproducties met actuele maatschappelijke thema’s.

Tijdens een inspirerend gesprek aan de tafel van een CiST-evenement (Talentontwikkeling & Cultuureducatie Tilburg) neemt Rogier ons mee op een boeiende reis door de creatieve wereld van zijn nieuwste muziekalbum, “Soundtrack of the Plastic Age”. Ontdek samen met ons zijn diepgewortelde drijfveren en zijn fascinatie voor muziek gecreëerd uit plastic.

Het album Soundtrack of the Plastic Age bestaat uit een verzameling uiteenlopende instrumentale slagwerkcomposities. De muziek ademt energie, is opzwepend en dan weer introvert en beschouwend. Samengevat, een breed scala aan indrukken die het werken met een urgent thema als globale vervuiling door plastic afval met zich meebrengt. Titels als ‘Lost in Excess’, ‘Plastic Eruption’, ‘Deep Sea Moonscape’, ‘Quest for Perspective’, ‘Solemn Walk’ vertellen de expressie van het nummer. Het zijn verschillende perspectieven op: The Plastic Age.

Voor de totstandkoming van zijn album werkte Rogier zowel vanuit zijn studio op het Brabantse platteland als in het oude Funkhaus in Berlijn.

In this episode, An Intersectional Lens to Environmental Injustice, host Mpho Nyamathe uses the theory of intersectionality, as described by Dr. Patricia Hill Collins, to dissect the intersecting inequalities experienced by miners and individuals living in mining-affected communities. This episode serves as a retelling of Mpho Nyamathe’s lecture on South Africa’s coal mines at the University of Johannesburg. 

Here within, this episode calls for infrastructure and social development that is aligned with Section 24 of South Africa’s Constitution. This episode calls for active community consultation. With that, the episode acknowledges the direct health impacts of coal experienced by residents of the Highveld Region, thereby making the case that mining is deeply interlinked with the oppression of black people as well as institutionalised gender and racial discrimination. 

As a way forward, this episode encourages young leaders to connect their academic expertise (particularly the student attendees who specialise in environmental sciences) with their advocacy, thereby fostering a society with qualified officials who work for the betterment of our people.

EP 9 The Politics of You and Me: An Intersectional Lens to Environmental Injustice

In this episode, The Just Energy Transition, host Mpho Nyamathe delves into the lived realities of mining-affected communities and mineworkers. She was invited to give an inspirational speech at the University of Pretoria in collaboration with the Royal Danish Embassy. 

Here within, Mpho Nyamathe explores the historical oppression of black miners during apartheid, the tragic killings of miners during the Marikana massacre and the job losses experienced by miners during Hendrina’s partial mine closure. 

By so doing, Mpho makes the case that inequalities experienced by mining-affected communities stem from the intersectional oppression of black people, especially black women, during South Africa’s racially oppressive apartheid era. 

This is how we see that structures of oppression are slow to change. Therefore, a truly just transition is one that accounts for those who are historically oppressed. Taking job losses into account, it is clear that this just transition cannot come at the expense of coal miners 
 For development to be impactful, it needs to be inclusive. 

As a point of departure, Mpho encouraged young people to participate in community-oriented initiatives. She encouraged young people to read, get published, and partner with impactful, youth-led organisations such as the African Climate Alliance.
