Flying Through Space & Time

Celebrate the solstice with a story that intertwines the magic of the Nutcracker with the urgency of world peace and environmental and climate action. Jack Eidt reads from his short story ‘Nutcracker and the Shapeshifter,’ a re-imagined classic that dances to the tune of environmental and social justice. Featuring a blend of fantastical characters and real-world issues, this episode of EcoJustice Radio is a call to action, wrapped in the wonder of a holiday tale, set to the enchanting music of Tchaikovsky’s ballet. Enjoy this tale of rebellion, peace, and the power of the natural world.

Based on The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet, with an 1892 score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The ballet libretto was adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Here we present Jack’s own pro-peace-environmental re-imagining of that story, called The Nutcracker and the Shape Shifter, published in 2022 in the Fifth Fedora Anthology of Weird Noir and Stranger Tales, Published by Borda Books. Mayo harpist Alannah Thornburgh talks about her debut album Shapeshifter, released February 12. She is inspired by the traditions of fairy folklore and mythology from rural Ireland. The project began when Alannah was commissioned to compose a piece for the Linenhall Arts Centre’s New Music in Mayo series, curated by traditional musician Emer Mayock. With the support of the Arts Council's Next Generation Award, Alannah conducted interviews with nearly 50 historians, storytellers, and locals, collecting stories and experiences that inform her music. These conversations are woven throughout the album. 

We talk about all this, as well the Thornburgh family band and the influence of her saxophone-playing dad, the influence of the late Conor Walsh, and her various collaborations with the likes of Lemoncello and Varo.

Martin Hölscher aka Morten MC, Le Plaisir Electronique (L.P.E.) and Chance Cumson is a hobby musician 👨‍🎤 focusing on electronic music. He is also part of the camp fire band Penchant For Mope (PFM). In principle, Chance Cumson stands for Synthwave, LPE for Trance, Darkwave and even classic music whereas Morten MC covers all sorts of club music including Italo Disco and experimental tracks. Finally, Smart Device and Regulator stretch from minimal electro to Cyberpunk music.

Hello friends, 
  I began dipping my toe into DJing in the mid 90s. Dissatisfied with the endless loop of the 7-10 songs on pop radio cracking out of the speakers in the salon I was working, I decided to try and bring my own music collection to the shop. I was an avid (possibly obsessive) collector of lounge, electronic, ambient and dance type music. Im embarrassed to say what I must have spent in those days at Oak Lawn Records, Tower, and Virgin - may they all rest in peace - but it also began time to get some equipment. I purchased some equipment, albeit simple rudimentary gear at my local guitar center and began making compilations at first, and mixes as I progressed and developed more of a skill and ear for it.
 Today I enjoy playing different types of sets and venues. I typically do a monthly show at one of the more underground-friendly spots in Dallas where i can play out some dance melting bangers, as well as more lounge and downtempo sets for hotel lobbies, art galleries and the like.

EcoJustice Radio presents environmental and climate stories from a social justice frame, featuring voices not necessarily heard on mainstream media.

Our purpose is to amplify community voices, broaden the reach of grassroots-based movements, and inspire action. "Pictureplane"(Travis Egedy), is a popular artist known for making his come up in the electronic music scene, DIY Venues, also popular for hanging around artists like "Grimes" and "Crystal Castles" in the early come up days of these artist, he is also the one who came up with the word "Witch House" which is a playful word on "House" music, though "Witch House" is now a popular music genre that is enjoyed by many.

"Crystal Castles" are actually one of the very first, if not the first electronic music duo to actually invent "Witch House" music, as you can hear dark beats and sorrow drawn out voices off of some of their early (demo songs/ Demo Album) dating back from "2007" and before that, which is crazy to think since during that time "Witch House" did not have a name for itself yet.
