The inaugural US-based Baifang Schell Book Prize for Chinese language fiction in English translation was recently awarded to the Taiwanese writer Yang Shuang-zi’s novel 'Taiwan Travelogue'. And with an ever-growing number of Chinese to English translators, and a well-resourced mainland Chinese publishing industry keen to expand globally, this could seem like a significant moment for Chinese writing. But with continuing censorship in China, and the rising popularity of often throwaway internet writing, can mainland Chinese fiction remain relevant and viable, and tackle important contemporary and historical themes? And with heightened tensions between China and the West in the last few years, is there still the same international interest from readers and publishers? Leading translators Jeremy Tiang, himself a published novelist and playwright, and Nicky Harman, founding member of the Chinese literature website Paper Republic, discuss the pressures and prospects for Chinese literature, while Daniel Li of UK-based publisher Sinoist Books reflects on the challenges of navigating between the Chinese and western publishing industries.

Ep197: Translating China — Prizes, pressures and prospects for Chinese literature today

Bishal is a native Nepalese that has lived in Singapore for many years. His journey into sound healing began when a friend asked him to bring back some singing bowls from his hometown in Nepal. He had never heard about singing bowls before then. The friend liked the quality of the bowls and so he began selling bowls ever since. Over the past few years, he attended classes in Nepal from his teacher, Shree Shahi, to learn more about the bowls. 

Our last session was a very short 3-minute cool down session in the same style, great for a quick release.

Sound Bath Sessions 158: Bishal Maharjan

Sound Bath Sessions, fuses sound and wellness by recording sound baths around Asia. The main purpose of the project is to be a platform that connects local practitioners and listeners together. 

These are not your usual sound bath recordings. Recorded live and on location, they are honest portraits of what a live sound bath sounds like to immerse you in their world. They capture the flavor of each location giving them a sense of identity and culture for everyone to hear and belong. 

Please note that some recordings may contain noises that could make the experience quite challenging, but listeners of all levels will be able to find a track to enjoy. Sound Bath Sessions is a Bivouac Recording project.

Voltaroxx is the sound of forgotten futures, midnight circuits, and dust-covered dreams rendered in rhythm and noise. Born from the flicker of CRT screens and raised on a steady infusion of cyberpunk cinema, glitchy game consoles, and VHS fuzz, he builds music that’s less about genre and more about atmosphere—audio collages from the back alleys of the imagination.

Growing up, Voltaroxx was glued to the glow of Blade Runner, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and obscure sci-fi anime taped over Saturday morning cartoons. The worlds were bleak but beautiful, eerie but electric. At the same time, he was living inside the soundchips of machines like the ZX Spectrum, NES, and Mega Drive—systems that hummed, beeped, and crackled with strange life. Those early sounds never left; they just evolved.

His music doesn’t follow rules or trends. One moment it's dusty lo-fi techno, the next it’s eerie ambient, then suddenly it's chaotic 160 BPM jungle with warped pads and broken memories. Tracks like VizzerLine show just how deep the time capsule goes—an atmospheric 90s jungle homage that blends ghosted-out pads with rolling breaks and a dreamlike energy..

Voltaroxx doesn’t believe in “sticking to one style.” He follows moods, fragments, old files, and the static of ideas half-remembered from forgotten arcade cabinets or the background hum of a tube TV. Some days it’s electro with a sci-fi edge. Other days, it’s decayed ambient or synth-heavy jams with melodies that loop like a corrupted memory card.

He never really thought anyone would listen. These tracks were, and still are, made mostly for himself—just an outlet, a way to exorcise digital ghosts. So when people started listening, following, commenting—it was surreal. It still is. Every play, every follow means a lot. No PR machine. No hype. Just raw sound from a bedroom somewhere, echoing into the void and somehow landing in your headphones.
