Peel Show Recordings from the 1980s!

The John Peel Show had a great influence on my musical tastes when growing up. Luckily, I was keen enough to record some of the programmes using my trusty twin-tape ‘ghetto blaster’ and these tapes have survived to this day, safely stored away…until NOW!

With modern technology, I am now digitalising these precious recordings for all to hear and enjoy 😎 :)

The first tape I have transcribed includes sessions by SLAB! and Stump, amongst other classic Indie tracks from the period - track list below. Also included in the recording are John’s droll and hilarious ramblings, and the recording starts with a classic Peel moment as he throws a jumping record across the studio 😅

The Session Bands
SLAB! were an industrial music/alternative rock band initially active between the mid-1980s and early 1990s. They reformed in 2009. More on SLAB! here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SLAB!

Stump were an Irish-English indie/experimental/rock group active from 1983-88, consisting of Mick Lynch (vocals), Rob McKahey (drums), Kev Hopper (bass) and Chris Salmon (guitar). Their music has been described as a mixture of Captain Beefheart and The Fall, and they are best known for their influential, critically acclaimed, but poor selling 1988 album, A Fierce Pancake. Recorded on a Maxell XLII C-90 chromium tape (see photo) - now over 35 years old, you may hear a few tape stretches here and there, as well as jumping records!, but the tape has stood up to the test of time very well :)

Peel Show recordings from the 1980s - sessions from SLAB! & Stump (13th Jan 1987)

Been into rock and indie music since the 1970s. Went to many gigs in the 1980s when a student. Fewer in recent years - highlights include The Smiths at Kingston Poly in 1983 (for 50p!), Iggy Pop + Suicide at Hammersmith in 2010, Iggy Pop again at the Royal Albert Hall in 2016. Long-time fan of John Peel (some original recordings on SoundCloud 😎) Also interested in railways and aviation with some unique recordings from the 70s & 80s also up on SoundCloud 😃
