159 years ago this month, a seven-year-old free African American girl, Sally Allison, was issued an “Indenture of Apprentice” to learn house keeping in a white household until she was eighteen years old.

The Freedmen’s Bureau, which came to Kentucky in 1866, was created to help formerly enslaved African Americans transition from slavery to freedom during Reconstruction. Multiple factors limited the Bureau’s success including lack of funds, limited staff and officials, and local white resistance. The condescending language of many contracts revealed the limited opportunities for independence for Black Kentuckians.

The apprenticeship contracts, like the one Sally received, recreated the dynamics of slavery where African American labor directly benefitted white Kentuckians.

However when Frederick addresses him as such, his 'master' takes offense; reminding Frederick that he is a servant and not a skave.NOTE: The term ‘servant’ in this video is referring to the practice of ‘domestic services’ or ‘domestic worker’. It is not referring to the practice of ‘indentured servitude’ or anything else like that.
