The tune is Úna Cuaichín Gleann Néifin, played on an early Overton low-whistle in D.

This very early instrument by Bernard Overton is quite easy to blow, has huge tone holes and a very nice balance between octaves. This have been recorded at Studio des Quatre Chemins. Medium distance between microphone and instrument, vintage D202 AKG microphone, no compression, little bit of reverb added.

More Whale song, this time leading into one of my favorite slow airs: Amhran na Leabhar.

This is from a concert in the Public theatre of Trinity College Dublin on 23rd July 2024.

Two Whales Pass by a Ship at Sea was written in 2019 specifically for the newly restored organ of the Public Theatre. The music takes advantage of this
instrument’s unusual capability of assigning different stop combinations to the
bass and treble portions of one keyboard, and of creating unusual tone qualities by
causing pipes to be only partially supplied with wind. It seeks to put the mind of
the listener far out at sea in a vessel whose course coincides with that of two blue
whales.
Amhran na Leabhar is a strikingly unusual and poignant air written by the poet
and teacher Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháin. It tells a sad tale. When relocating from
Derrynane to Portmagee in the early 1800s, Ó Súilleabháin travelled by land
whilst his collection of precious books was sent by boat. In a disastrous turn of
events, the boat carrying his invaluable possessions struck a rock and sank.
Amhran na Leabhar (‘song of the books’) is Ó Súilleabháin’s lament for his perished library. He was a famous man of knowledge, versed in the soon-to-be-
extinct Brehon law (Gaelic Ireland’s ancient legal code) that was still taught in hedge schools across the Ivearagh peninsula. In an age when books in and of themselves were of immense value, and Gaelic literature was increasingly discarded and ostracised, this ill-fated boat voyage must have been regretted
deeply by the song’s author.

This 6/4 Slow Air is named after a stretch of water and rocks between the Fidra Island and the shoreline close to Yellowcraig and the village of Dirleton in the Scottish Lowlands

“Flower o’ the Quern.” is a Scottish, Slow Air. Composed by Aberdeenshire fiddler J. Scott Skinner (5 August 1843 – 17 March 1927) He was a Scottish dancing master, violinist, fiddler and composer. He is considered to be one of the most influential fiddlers in Scottish traditional music.

Drumspyder weaves a web of percussive rhythm, melody, and line. Framedrums, tambourines, and  low whistles mingle with bass beats and ethereal atmospheres, bringing the Celtic and British Islands traditional music into vital contemporary expression.

Scott Sterling has always followed the path of rhythm. Over the course of a long journey through diverse forms of drumming and dance music: avant-garde circus, slinky bellydance troupes, and acclaimed bass-music productions, the one constant has been the beat of the drum. 

Over the past several years he has specialised in the realm of framedrums and tambourines. Influenced by modern framedrum masters such as Glen Velez and David Kuckhermann, but also inspired by the rhythms of the Irish bodhran, he follows a distinctive path through the world of contemporary percussion: fusing his experience with cross-cultural framedrum techniques and Arabic rhythms with a new-found love of Celtic dance music. 

To this rhythmic foundation he adds traditional melodies (played on low whistles and various keyboards) drawn from the folk music of Ireland, Scotland, and England , as well as the rich repertoire of Medieval and Renaissance music from the British Isles. 

Out of the alchemy of rhythm, melody, and his long experience in dance music production, he has forged a unique approach to Celtic and Medieval fusion, where elements of trance, bass-heavy electronica, and ethereal atmospheres mingle into an intoxicating brew. His overall ambition is to connect traditional rhythms and melodies with the contemporary dancefloor.
