The fate of where the Tampa Bay Rays will be playing after 2026 is still up in the air, after two strikes for the team: the first Hurricane Milton ripping off the fabric roof off of Tropicana Field followed by strike two the Pinellas County Supervisors delaying a vote on whether to approve taking out bonds to finance $312.5 million for a portion of the stadium costs.  Fortunately, the St. Pete City Council voted last week to approve issuing $287.5 million for a share of the stadium costs.

İzmir Atatürk Lisesi’nden sonra,  Robert Kolej Yüksek Okulu (RKYO) Kimya Mühendisliği Bölümü’nden mezun oldum. 1966’da RKYO’yu Türkiye Milli Talebe Federasyonu (TMTF) bünyesinde temsil ettim.   1967’de Mühendis Mektebi Talebe Cemiyeti’nin (RKMMTC) genel sekreterliğine, 1966 ve 1967’de  Robert Kolej Öğrenci Birliği (RKÖB) başkan yardımcılığına seçildim. 1968-69’da Robert Kolej Yüksek Okulu’nu bugünkü Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’ne dönüştüren süreci başlatan Öğrenci Birliği’nin başkanıydım.  1967, 68, 69 yıllarında yapılan “RK Kültür Haftası” (tiyatro, klasik müzik, folklor, kültürel etkinlikler) organizasyonlarında yönetici olarak görev yaptım.

Aynı dönemde Türkiye Devrimci İşçi Sendikaları Konfederasyonu (DİSK) üyesi Lastik-İş ve Maden-İş sendikalarının eğitim çalışmalarında görev aldım, yayın organlarında imzasız yazılar yazdım. 12 Mart 1971 darbesinden sonra yaklaşık 2 yıl, 12 Eylül 1980 darbesinden sonra yaklaşık 3 yıl hapis yattım. 1971’de öğrenci hareketleri ve yazılarım nedeniyle yargılandım, davalar  görülürken gelen “genel af” ile hapisten çıktım. 1974-76 yılları arasında DİSK üyesi Kimya-İş Sendikası’nda Eğitim Dairesi Müdürü olarak çalıştım. 18 ay Türk Haber Ajansı (THA) Dış Haberler Bölümü’nde görev yaptım. 12 Eylül 1980 askeri darbesinden sonra DİSK bünyesindeki çalışmalarımdan yargılandım, beraat ettim. Türkiye’de her iki darbede de hapis yatıp işkence gören az sayıda kişiden biri olarak bu konuda benimle yapılan uzun röportaj İçeri’den (Reyhan Yıldız, Literatür, İstanbul 2009) adlı kitapta yer aldı.

Kimya mühendisi olarak hiç çalışmadım. Uzun yıllar gazeteci (ANT, Türk Haberler Ajansı, Rapor…) ve sendikacı olarak çalıştım. Hapisten çıktıktan sonra kimseler iş vermeyip işsiz kalınca profesyonel turizm rehberliği sınavını kazanıp kurslarını izleyerek profesyonel rehber oldum ve  1985 yılında FEST Travel’ı kurdum. 1985 yılından bu yana Türkiye’de kültür turizminin öncülüğünü yapan, bir sanat ve kültür tasarımcısı gibi İstanbul ve çevresinde günübirlik yaklaşık 300, yurtiçinde yaklaşık 200 özgün güzergâh yaratan FEST Travel’ı yönetiyorum. Son otuz yılda Türkiye içinde ve dışında yerli ve yabancı binlerce gezgini kültür gezileriyle gezdirdim. Medya beni  “kültür gezilerinin duayeni”, “kültür turizminin öncüsü” olarak tanımlıyor.

Altı yıl kurucu başkanlığını yaptığım (2003-2009) ve şimdilerde Onursal Başkanı olduğum Kültür Bilincini Geliştirme Vakfı (KBGV) Seminerleri’nde “Dinler Tarihi”, “Hinduizm”, “Budizm”, “Türklerde Budizm”, “Şamanlık”, “Heterodoksi”,  “Ateizm”, “Semboller” benzeri dersler veriyorum.

Türkiye Seyahat Acentaları Birliği (TÜRSAB) Kültür Turizmi Komitesi Başkanlığı, TÜRSAB Başkanlık Danışmanlığı, İstanbul 2010 Avrupa Kültür Başkenti Ajansı Danışma ve Yönetim Kurulu üyeliği ile Turizm ve Seyahat Acentaları Vakfı (TURSAV) Başkanlığı görevlerinde bulundum. KBGV ve Turizm Gazeteci ve Yazarları Derneği (TUYED) üyesiyim.
