Living In Algeria

The confederations and clans collectively known as the Tuareg descend from the oldest inhabitants of North Africa. They lead a mostly nomadic existence across the Sahara Desert, in the lands we now know as Algeria, Libya, Niger and Mali. Tuareg communities have long felt neglected by independent African governments, especially in Mali, which has endured a succession of rebellions. In 2012, a Tuareg uprising led to a year-long crisis in which the Malian north separated from the country and fell under harsh control by Islamic extremists. Ironically, these extremists banned music, which in the hands of modern bands like Tinariwen had been a crucial means for expressing Tuareg aspirations. This broadcast unravels this complex history and provides a vivid portrait of the Tuareg predicament in Mali today. The program samples a rich variety of Tuareg music and includes conversations with Tuareg musicians and cultural authorities in the wake of Mali’s crisis, as well as with University of Houston anthropologist Susan Rasmussen, who has been researching and writing about Tuareg culture for over 30 years, and veteran journalist and author Andy Morgan.

Not a place on a map, but a feeling. A rhythm that moves through the soil, the sky, the soul.

African music is not just heard—it’s felt. It’s the heartbeat of a village at dusk.
The laughter of children chasing shadows. The call-and-response between ancestors and tomorrow. Drums speak in ancient tongues. Vocals soar like birds tracing the wind.
And somewhere in that tapestry, a melody emerges—one that reminds us we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

As I sit in my studio in Sydney, the sun rising over the Pacific, I feel the echo of that tune.
It travels across oceans, time zones, and tangled cables. It finds its way into my compositions, my reflections, my gratitude. And I send it back out—through speakers, through stories, through shared moments with you.

In The Heart of Africa

This creative team met back in high school in Houston, Texas in 1969. They became friends quickly and discovered a unique synergy early on – songwriting. Keith manifested his expressions mostly in the area of lyrics, while Raji fashioned his creativity through melodies and arrangements.

The number of songs that they generated as young teens in a short period of time was incredible. What was even more astonishing was that neither of them could read a musical note, and yet they were able to compose lyrics, tunes, chords, beats, and develop sophisticated arrangements.

School, work, marriage, children, and associations with other bands threw them onto separate life paths. Raji continued composing with other bands and on his own, while Keith officially took a long hiatus.

The team temporarily regrouped in the early 1980’s for a few profound Christian musical offerings. Eventually, Raji found the time and energy to record many of their earlier songs and publish them – both in several of his novels and on soundcloud.com. Then in late 2021 they regrouped once more to continue their creative journey together.

I am a music producer/composer from Sydney, Australia. Classically trained percussionist and drummer. Played in orchestras and nightclub bands for several years. I've got a diverse musical portfolio from Rockabilly tours around the world to producing House and EDM tracks, I've lived multiple musical lives with these experiences and collaborations significantly influencing my electronic compositions.
My journey from classical percussion to electronic dance music is phenomenal. With all these influences, my compositions carry a unique flavor.
