Episode 869: The Kill Room

This week, we're checking in to the heartbreak hotel and taking the express checkout to Hell as Spooktober continues with a minor forgotbuster based on a story by Stephen King. It's 2007's 1408, directed by Mikael Håfström, and starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Jasmine Jessica Anthony, Tony Shaloub, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Len Cariou. The movie is not nearly scary enough to really leave a lasting impression, but it's not bad either, as its Swedish director injects a good amount of visual flair into a one-location concept, and Cusack is more than capable of carrying the load in what is largely a one-man show. Plus: We've got a mixed bag of theatrical field reports, as our intrepid hosts have combined to see The Wild Robot and Megalopolis!

If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 1408 is currently streaming on Hollywood Suite north of the border at the time this episode was released. You can probably also find it at your local library.

"The Piano Lesson" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for the performances from its cast and for Malcolm Washington's adaptation of August Wilson's 1987 play to the screen, making his directorial debut in terrific fashion. Malcolm Washington, along with his brother John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, Ray Fisher, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Potts, were all nice enough to spend some time with me talking about bringing the play to the big (or small if you're watching it at home on Netflix) screen. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in select theaters and will be available to stream on Netflix on November 22nd. Imperial Broadcast - Skeleton Crew Initial Thoughts

Great cast, big names, sadly resulted in an unrewatchable reboot. The skin-tight (well, to whom it applies) suit, forgettable plot. The reveal of how much of Murphy survived was a good, heartbreaking scene. But this movie didn't work, not alot of great chemistry, not enough setup. Odd to release it in February, just in time for Valentine's Day. I watched it once, no desire to see it again.

En oh ja, JP wil het blijkbaar ook nog eventjes over ‘ The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ hebben. We trokken de Duitse film ‘Der Todesking’ uit de kast. In de Special hebben we het uitgebreid over ‘Jackie Brown’ van Quentin Tarantino en ook deze keer beantwoorden we weer vragen van luisteraars, erg interessante vragen zelfs over o.a. de tijd tussen seizoenen of films in een franchise, nieuwere films die we graag in de jaren 80 of 90 gemaakt hadden willen zien worden, filmset anekdotes, films om aan aliens te laten zien en oude series die een Imax-knaller verdienen.
