Tokyo's @sapphire-slows has her own distinctive aesthetic. The music she makes is ghostly and delicate, eerie yet beautiful. The multi-talented artist plays her own synths and keys and layers her own beautiful vocal drones into her tracks to lend them extra intimacy. This of course means she has toured extensively and released on labels such as Japan's Big Love, Greece's Nous and LA's Not Not Fun/100% Silk. Despite often making and playing music with the brain cleansing purity demonstrated on 2017 album Time, Sapphire Slows can also do more caustic and mechanical sounds, as on 2014's Allegoria LP.

This week's mix explores a melancholic and introspective mood, but it is never dark. A range of mid-tempo rhythms set the tempo. Sometimes they're dubby and linear, at others more bubbling and off-grid, while the synths above glow like fireflies or glisten like knives in the sun. Organic bird calls float above hyper-real synthetic textures and the overall effect is to cocoon you in suspensory and meditative sound that feels out of this world.

Following last year’s inception of Phuture Shock Excursions, the new vinyl-only imprint returns with a stellar remix package of Bristolian producer OPR8’s ‘Call To Riddle’ featuring Autumn Music, which appeared in its original form on the inaugural EXCURSIONS 12”.

For this release the Bristol label look to both sides of the pacific for their remix commissions, which come courtesy of Californian husband-and-wife duo - Peaking Lights, renowned for their signature fusion of cosmic dub and synth-laden dreampop via critically acclaimed LP’s on the likes of LA’s Not Not Fun and Domino sub-label Weird World. Secondly on board is Tokyo-based Sapphire Slows - an artist borne out of the burgeoning ‘bedroom producer’ electronic scene of her home city a few years ago, who has since built a more global profile having also released music on Not Not Fun and 100% Silk.

As an accomplished DJ, radio show host, vocalist, producer, published writer, & promo label head, with no shortage of curveballs in her repertoire, she has shared decks with some of industry’s finest such as Anjunadeep's Martin Roth, Cubicolor, John Monkman, Sebastien Leger, David Hohme, Roy Rosenfeld, & Edu Imbernon + Miss Melera, Jerome Isma-ae, Tim Engelhardt, Sascha Braemer, BLANCAh, & the legendary Sasha & Digweed at Montreal’s Igloofest. 

Also host of a top rated monthly show, Undercurrents, on DIFM for nearly 6 years, she managed the global community & promo channel @getting-deeper for 2 yrs & played 3 European & UK tours in 2019, including host & artist at the world renowned ADE.

After her debut EP in 2020 on UK imprint, Configurations of Self, Feb.4/22 saw juSt b debut alongside new Hungary producer NorB on @john-digweed's iconic @bedrock_rec, followed by a special guest mix for his legendary Transitions radio show. With two more EPs in March & May on Life Scripts & Config of Self, supported by none other than Sasha in NYC & Manchester, July 15th saw her solo EP on Balance + a Balance Selections mix & interview - home to legends like James Holden & Henry Saiz. With that came Digweed's Live in London Limited edition CD & Vinyl then in Oct. she had her 3rd Config of Self release + a new collab with Fractal Architect on Cinematique. Rounding out 2022, she & NorB are featured on Digweed's Quattro III album w/ 3 new tracks & finally, as part of Bedrock's Best of 2022 Collection. An epic year of milestones with much more to come!
