"Here Am I, the Servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word."

Then Mary Said: I. "Here Am I"

"He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate . . . He has filled the hungry, and the rich He has sent away empty."

Then Mary Said: II. "He Has Brought Down the Mighty"

"Mary treasured these things in her heart."

Then Mary Said: III. "In Her Heart"

"On the third day there was a wedding . . ." - thus begins one of my favorite Mother Mary scenes in scripture. The wedding party runs out of wine and Mary asks Jesus (her son) to perform a miracle, "There is no wine," she said to him. He initially refuses to perform the miracle, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My time has not yet come." Mary turns away from her son's refusal and says to the servants, "Do whatever He tells you." The rest is history, isn't it? Water was turned into wine.

Then Mary Said: IV. "There is no Wine."

This introspective choral work for unaccompanied SATB choir was written for Neshawn Calloway and her high school choral students at Chattanooga's Center for Creative Arts. The text deals with the joy and sorrow we experience in human life, often simultaneously, and our ability to move forward in spite of grief, with hope in our hearts.
