Jordan is a state in the Near East. It borders Israel, Palestine (with the border under Israeli control), Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea at the Gulf of Aqaba (where it has a maritime border with Egypt). Jordan is one of the so-called Mashreq states. The majority of the more than 11.5 million inhabitants are Sunni Arabs. The capital and largest city is Amman.

Jordan was formed during the First World War as a result of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. From 1921 to 1946 it existed as the “Emirate of Transjordan,” which was a British protectorate. Jordan became independent in 1946, two years before the rest of the British League of Nations mandate (now Israel and Palestine). Jordan then went directly into a decades-long military conflict with Israel over the adjacent West Bank, which was only ended with a peace treaty in 1994. For some time now, the country has been characterized primarily by the reception of many refugees; Jordan is the country in the world with the second highest proportion of refugees in the country's population (after Lebanon, as of 2020).

The government of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy, but the king has extensive executive and legislative powers. Jordan is a founding member of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The country has a high human development index and belongs to the group of low-middle income economies. Jordan's economy, one of the smallest in the region, is attractive to foreign investors due to its skilled workforce. The country is a major tourist destination and also attracts medical tourists due to its well-developed healthcare sector. Nevertheless, a lack of natural resources, a large influx of refugees and regional unrest have slowed economic growth.

Oman is a state in Western Asia in the east of the Arabian Peninsula. The approximately five million inhabitants live primarily in cities. Almost half of the population are immigrants, mainly from India. Omanis are 95 percent Muslim, predominantly Sunnis and Ibadis. The Sultanate is an absolute monarchy and at the same time has a constitution. The ministers appointed by the Sultan and the two national parliaments only have an advisory role.

The country was ruled by the absolutist ruler Sultan Qaboos ibn Said from 1970 to January 2020. Qaboos ibn Said died on January 10, 2020. His cousin, the 65-year-old Culture Minister Haitham ibn Tariq, was appointed as his successor.

Over the last few decades, Oman has developed from a severely backward to a moderately prosperous state. A 2013 United Nations report named Oman as the country that has improved its social and economic situation the most over the last 40 years.

Since 1989, the North Carolina Heritage Awards have honored artists statewide for their contributions to the cultural lives of their communities. The Folklife program of the North Carolina Arts Council is pleased to spotlight the five artists/groups who will be presented with the 2025 awards on June 7, at a public ceremony in Raleigh.

In this episode, we visit Winston-Salem to meet Gaurang Doshi, a North Indian classical musician. He passes along the teachings of his guru to the next generation of musicians through private lessons in sarod, sitar and tabla, as well as through an Indian ensemble class he helped to establish at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the first such class in the state. 

The honorees for 2025 are: Round Peak Guitarist, Chester McMillian; Lumbee traditional artisans, Herman and Loretta Oxendine; North Indian classical musician, Gaurang Doshi; Brasstown Woodcarver, Helen Gibson; and Gospel Quartet, The Glorifying Vines Sisters. Tetouze, grows with techno & spent half of his life learning Indian music. He plays sitar, tabla, flute, violin with his own electro compositions.

At 11 years old, Tetouze access to turntables. His big brother teach him DJing. When teenager he composes with synthetizers and Cubase on Atari computer . He records few short electro techno albums between 1995 to 1998, then goes to London and produces techno music in his big brother's studio.  2002 he released a LP "Tyreless" indian breakbeat style. Back to France, he join the crew "Beatbox" as a breakbeat Drum&Bass DJ. 2004 he goes to India to learn sitar and tabla. He starts to live in a van (for the next 12 years) and continues to spent every winter in India. From 2007 he starts a group in Goa :  "Minimal Fusion" and  releases his first album electro acoustic fusion. Then he learns indian violin and bansuri, he composes a solo concert with all these instruments + electronic equipment and plays small concerts while travelling(Peru, Equator, Mexico...).  From 2014, he plays in street festivals, then has tour in Ukraine, Russia, India, Mexico & Egypt. Since 2020, he released 2 albums and 27 EP with LABO LOGIC record and "Samyojana" LP on O'tawa record. He played in Son libre, Cabaret Sauvage, Hadra, Isis Garden, Okami, Harmonic, Rock au Chateau, Kaleidoscope, Vibronica

Even as a small child I wanted to learn a musical instrument...

...since there was a music school in our small town where I grew up, but it was limited to the activities of the local musicians' band, the choice was rather limited... because piano, guitar or saxophone were not offered and that's why I decided me for the trumpet, which was not used for cast-technical reasons, so the FLÜGELHORN became my instrument...
In my youth I turned my back on music and was active in sports towards the end of my teenage years.
