In this podcast episode, we dive deep into history, education, and resilience with a guest whose life has crossed paths with some of the most defining moments in American history. 

Dr. Billy Joe Evans, born in 1942, grew up in segregated Macon, Georgia at a time when educational and career opportunities for Black students were limited. Despite this, he went on to graduate from Morehouse College and receive a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and eventually became a full time professor at the University of Michigan. 

Dr. Evans is a chemist, educator, and mentor who has shaped generations through his work at the Univeristy of Michigan.

The Trump administration’s civil rights policies dismantled affirmative action, revoked DEI initiatives, and rolled back segregation bans for federal contractors. Executive orders weakened protections against police bias, hate crimes, and discriminatory housing practices, leading to a 60% decline in DOJ civil rights cases. HUD suspended the AFFH rule, and the Education Department cut OCR staff, compromising fair housing enforcement and educational equity for marginalized communities.

"Réunir les bouts du monde est une rencontre avec des oeuvres visuelles, littéraires, musicales et critiques, étatsuniennes et caribéennes, qui portent en elles la mémoire de l’esclavage transatlantique. L’histoire de l’esclavage ne s’est pas arrêtée aux abolitions, elle s’est poursuivie par les expressions propres à la ségrégation, au racisme, aux lynchages, à la prison, aux répressions sociales, culturelles, politiques, policières des XXe et XXIe siècles dans l’ensemble des pays en ayant fait l’expérience.

En invoquant des artistes, écrivain·es et intellectuel·les qui ont fondé leur pratique sur la rupture irréversible provoquée par quatre siècles de commerce triangulaire, Elvan Zabunyan questionne ce que cette histoire continue de produire aujourd’hui. La survivance des traces mémorielles de l’esclavage et leur transmission sont un moteur fédérateur des créations artistiques, faisant du dispersement et de la fragmentation une question éminemment esthétique et poétique. Les allers-retours dans l’espace et dans le temps, ainsi que l’omniprésence d’un passé qui éclaire le présent, sont pensés par l’autrice comme des étreintes traversées d’affects, faisant de l’histoire de l’art qu’elle écrit un récit situé, sensible et engagé."

Historienne de l’art contemporain, Elvan Zabunyan est professeure à l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et critique d’art. Ses travaux portent depuis plus de vingt-cinq ans sur les problématiques raciales, post-coloniales et féministes dans l’art aux XXe puis XXIe siècles. Elle est l’autrice d’un ouvrage pionnier, Black is a color. Une histoire de l’art africain-américain (Dis Voir, 2004) ainsi que de la première monographie sur Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (Presses du réel, 2013). Elle a codirigé des ouvrages, écrit de nombreux articles pour des recueils collectifs, des catalogues d’exposition internationaux et des périodiques.

Black excellence triumphs despite DEI crackdown

In this episode, Jon and Arnie chat more about the Trump administration’s ongoing assault on Harvard University. We highlight some complexities to this dynamic. On the one hand, Harvard is the current bulwark against Trump’s authoritarian effort to control every aspect of every university in the country. For this reason, Harvard’s fight is everyone’s fight. On the other hand, Harvard enabled Trump’s escalating attacks on racial justice and free speech on campus. So even as Harvard deserves our support, it also warrants our continued criticism. We also discuss the Trump administration’s open desire to make integration illegal. Wondering where the idea comes from? Try Barry Goldwater, who in 1964 rehearsed the argument “the Constitution is color-blind . . . and so it is just as wrong to compel children to attend certain schools for the sake of so-called integration as for the sake of segregation.”
