Drop into a memory: Let your unconscious find a time you actually felt this way before.   Blend them. Bring that old feeling into the imagined future — your brain doesn’t know the difference. #468 I Feel Sh*t So Let's Change

On this Thanksgiving week 2025 and episode 304 of Take Flight Weekly, I revisit one of the most powerful performance basics in my playbook: gratitude. Not the soft version. The real thing. The kind that rewires your brain and anchors you when life is chaotic.
I'll walk you through my personal affirmation that starts with "I am so happy and grateful," unpack why I built it the way I did, and connect it to what the science of gratitude is proving right now. Then we'll get tactical with a simple, elite-level gratitude strategy you can execute in five minutes a day.

In Q4 2010, I was under real financial pressure. The business was hard, the numbers were tight, and I realized I had zero chance of winning if I didn't get control of what was happening between my ears. My goal was simple: Keep my emotional frequency at 51 percent or higher. Slightly more optimistic than pessimistic.

Around that time, I was studying Bob Proctor and John Assaraf. They made one point that landed hard: Success starts in your mind long before it shows up in your bank account. So I wrote my own affirmation, and I've now said it tens of thousands of times.
Meta-analyses of gratitude interventions show consistent gains in life satisfaction and mental health. Neuroscience work shows that gratitude practices light up reward and regulation centers in the brain. It's not just a "nice idea" anymore. It's a proven performance tool.

The Anatomy of My Affirmation
→ "I AM" – The two most powerful words. Your subconscious accepts whatever follows.
→ "So happy and grateful" – Happiness and gratitude are inputs, not trophies. They're a frequency you decide to live in.
→ "That money, success, and introductions" – Gratitude keeps you focused on opportunities you already have.
→ "Flow to me" – The kind of flow that shows up when your mindset, actions, and relationships are aligned.
→ "In ever increasing quantities from a myriad of different sources" – Gratitude is a flywheel that compounds over time.
→ "For the betterment of all those involved" – I never wanted success that only worked for me.
→ "My life is perfect" – I choose to see my current reality as raw material, not punishment.
→ "Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better" – Pure 1% better math.

→ Gratitude improves mental health – Reduces anxiety and depression
→ Gratitude changes the brain – Activates reward and regulation regions
→ Gratitude improves physical health and sleep
→ Gratitude strengthens relationships
→ Structured gratitude tools work in as little as 6-10 sessions

Three Gratitude Habits for Advisors
→ The 60-Second Morning Affirmation
Before you touch your phone, stand up, breathe deeply, and say your affirmation. Say it like you mean it.
→ The Weekly Gratitude Text or Voice Memo
Once a week, send one client, mentor, or team member a note saying specifically why you appreciate them. No pitch. Pure appreciation.
→ Gratitude Reset in Real Time

When anxiety spikes, stop for thirty seconds. Name three things you're grateful for in that exact 
moment. Use gratitude as a pattern interrupt.

I coach to happy and grateful results, not production. Production is a lagging indicator. Execution of being grateful is a leading indicator. When you're grounded, happy, and genuinely grateful, your business expands with less friction.

That's not woo-woo. That's strategy.

In this slightly longer Five-Minute Quickie, we’re digging into one of the sneakiest, most stubborn beliefs so many of us carry around: “I’m not good enough.” Where did it come from? Why does it stick? And how do we uncover what’s really underneath it? This FMQ is all about preparing you for the deeper dive coming in the next longer episode, where I’ll be guiding you through a process to change this belief for good. But first, we need a seed — a direction — so when we get there, your unconscious mind is already lined up and ready to shift. What We Explore Today   How “I’m not good enough” often starts with something very specific.   Why a general belief always has a more personal root underneath it.   The types of life experiences where this message gets planted.   How your unconscious mind tries (clumsily!) to protect you with limiting beliefs.   A gentle exercise to uncover the real identity belief below the surface.   Your Mini-Mission Before we get to the long episode:   Notice the feeling of “I’m not good enough.”   Keep the intensity no higher than a 5 out of 10.   Ask:   “I’m not good enough because I’m…?”     Let the deeper belief rise — something identity-level like “I’m stupid,” “I’m invisible,” “I’m useless.”   Just notice it. No fixing today — just understanding.   This gentle curiosity will set you up beautifully for the transformation we’ll create together next week. A personal look at me:
 
The above sentence was not always the case and being the best in the financial realms of the building industry was my aim and getting there by any means. I now know this is, and was, the worst way ~ even if I did make director of one of the largest building companies in Cambridge by the age of 30.
 
One of the major realisations came on my first ever training in hypnosis. I found that it’s not a win lose world and that a win win is only a low basis to live.
 
Being true to your beliefs and coming from a place of integrity where service is paramount. This understanding together with lots of NLP skills helped create my last partnership in the building industry grow from a turnover of £800k to £16m in less than twelve years and that can only be done with giving more than expected.
 
Another shaping of me came from two traumatic events in my life that happened within six months of each other which created a number of major changes in me and by beliefs in what is possible. I have written about my experience and how I dealt with it but more importantly it really showed me my love for my three boys and theirs for me and resulted in the step up to become a trainer of NLP (which I never intended) and my close and exciting work with two of my sons. In supporting Joseph and help create change in people in our training’s and his wonderful life changing ‘Be your potential weekend’ and with Luke the continuing development of Cambridge Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis processes. My relationship with my third son Daniel just keeps getting better and better too.
 
Not knowing how good I had become in change work in the beginning I generally studied, practiced and saw clients then things started to happen when I started to work following just my instincts. Two clients come to mind both in effect dying from the effects of what was happening to them and the way they felt and within one and two sessions respectively not only won the will to live they changed virtually in front of my eyes and being apart of that process was and is the best feeling alive.
 
The above are just three of many brilliant learnings I have had in my life.
