EP53: The Apartment (1960)

"American Dreamer" marks the feature directorial debut of Paul Dektor. Paul became interested in the topic of the film after hearing a podcast on NPR's This American Life. The story is about a person who is able to buy an apartment for cheap if they would allow the person who owned the property to remain in the apartment until they died.

The idea resonated with him, especially the concept of what the American Dream used to be compared to what it is today. It's a vastly different conversation to have between the generation before and after his own, and he wanted to explore a relatable and flawed character's deep and desperate slide into this notion of the ultimate need. The arc of the story is the journey, he hoped to explore in a unique, emotional, and comedic way.

Following the screening, Deadline's chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on PBS SoCal's Must See Movies, moderates a Q&A with director/producer Paul Dektor.

September 8, 2024. Film historian Rick Winston, founder of the Lightening Ridge Film Society and operator of the Savoy Theater in Montpelier, is the author of "Save Me A Seat: A Life With Movies". He was invited to the Trouble With Harry Festival  in Craftsbury to deliver remarks concerning the making of that film on Craftsbury Common in 1954 by Alfred Hitchcock, and starring Shirley MacLaine, in her first movie role, and John Forsythe. The Festival was organized by both the Craftsbury Library and The Craftsbury Historical Society. Rick's visit was underwritten by Vermont Humanities in Montpelier. These are his remarks.

My main focus is yoga, meditation and research of Gautama Buddha and health of body and society. I'm creating a yoga centre outside of Oaxaca City to share my discoveries of exploration in this place called 'truth in a pathless landscape', to paraphrase Krishnamurti.
