"Silent Highway"

Formed out of the ashes of the post-punk outfit Finger Printz, the Silencers' core was comprised of two members of that band--guitarist Cha Burns and singer Jimme O'Neill. The Silencers quickly signed to RCA and hit the ground running, putting out three brilliant albums in under five years. They toured with Squeeze, The Pretenders, The Alarm and at one point, when opening for Simple Minds at Wembley, they played in front of 80,000 people. And they crushed it. O'Neill is one of those frontmen you can't take your eyes off--he's a dynamic performer who's loaded with energy and charisma, making every second of a Silencers gig a thrilling experience. The Silencers have put out nearly fifteen albums, including A Letter From St. Paul, A Blues For Buddah, A Night Of Electric Silence and their latest effort Silent Highway, which marks their first album in fifteen years. And they haven't lost a step--O'Neill remains one of the most thoughtful songwriters around and Silent Highway is a thrilling return to form. Although Burns passed away in 2007, O'Neill is carrying the torch proudly along with a crack band that includes two of his kids, Aura and James O'Neill. This is an expurgated history of a brilliant band, but Jimme will fill in the gaps and then some--he's got some amazing stories and profound insights. This guy is the real deal.

Singer and songwriter.  Neo-80s Rock, Pop Ballads, Country Rock, and Blue Eyed Soul.

Started as a mobile DJ with Chymes International mobile disco’s at Windsor Safari Park (now Legoland)  which led to my move to the Middle East to DJ at the Gulf Hotel in Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman (which truly changed my life!) and my first introduction to broadcasting, firstly as a (useless) newscaster at Radio Oman (2 hours of English-language broadcasting per day) and then presenting a weekly programme (recorded on my disco unit in the Hotel!) I called ‘DiscOman’ (clever eh?) 2.5 years DJ-ing in Muscat led to my relocation to Bahrain, the Island where I truly cut my teeth on music radio, working with a top crew of English broadcasters on Radio Bahrain, a commercial, English-language, National radio station and interviewing such luminaries as Professor Jimmy Edwards and Eric Sykes, Derek Nimmo, Patrick McNee, Petula Clarke and even Andrew Ridgely (Wham!) and Edwin Starr. Returning (eventually) to the UK, having a Radio Broadland presenter as a customer of the pub I bought, I was invited to become a late night presenter, then went onto early evenings and then finally took promotion to Drive Time, on the regional, commercial radio station, Radio Broadland (the Big Time!).  In addition, I had a spell with BBC Radio Norfolk and finally ended a career, perhaps unusually, not exclusively as a radio presenter, but back in broadcasting again with local radio station Park Radio where, once again, I ended up interviewing very many well known celebrities and performers, such as Shakatak, Lindisfarne, Paul Young, Joni Mitchell, Si Cranstoun, The Real Thing etc.

When I hear the sound of concrete and steel, I sense a rhythm, that science can't feel.

Covid lockdown gave me the time to put together a project I always wanted to do but never had the time with a busy schedule.  I picked out close to 100 songs that inspired me to get into music.  Most are from the 1970s and early 1980s when I turned onto music and my influences.  A couple of the songs are from the later 1980s and couple of pearls from later that I couldn’t resist including.  I wanted to redo them with different flavors, almost in a way that I would have arranged and produced them.  The outcomes were dense and organic by design but it was clear where my creativity was taking each song.  Heavy influences from other artists   Too many credits to those who assisted or played on this project.  I will add them later but it was truly a transatlantic effort with contributors from Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, NYC, LA, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver and San Francisco as well as me holed up at my two studios in California, playing, tracking, arranging, engineering and producing.  

 I hope you enjoy these reimaginations.  It was fun making them.  Something I leave as a gift to those who love music. At some point I will write a companion piece outlining the thinking, instruments and gear used along with production notes for the project. 😃

Back then I started to buy and read Mixmag, Muzik Magazine along with DJ Mag for years. Since I have amassed an extensive vinyl (7000+) & CD (500+) collection, along with a huge collection of high quality digital audio files over the years in my computer. I play mostly progressive house, deep house, and techno music, along with sets of industrial & new wave and ambient music, which were my musical interests prior to the rave parties of the 90’s. I’ve loved electronic music since I was young from Duran Duran to Depeche Mode to New Order to Ministry, Skinny Puppy, FRONT 242, Siouxsie & The Banshees, to DJs Sasha & John Digweed, Tiga, Jeno & Garth, and The Hardkiss Brothers (Scott, Robbie & Gavin Hardkiss) the list is endless. Today I still love to use vinyl records in my sets along with digital files & CDs. As an audio engineer from SAE Expression College I prefer to use vinyl records or AIFF/WAV files when I am putting out an 320kpbs MP3 recording of a set that I’m DJing so as to keep the best sound quality. I love to craft a journey using music for others to enjoy along with introducing brand new artists and songs within my sets.  –HALSTON aka DJJUDD
