Democracy's Last Dance

Berlin-based SIRS is back on Hell Yeah with the new single 'Woman', an instrumental version plus a remix from label favourite My Friend Dario.

Sirsounds Records label head SIRS, which means Sounds In Real Stereo and is an alias of Daniel Klein, is a mainstay of the scene with releases on the likes of Live At Robert Johnson and a distinctive laidback style. He previously contributed to the first volume in the File Under Balearic Gabba EP series and brings the goodness once more here.

'Woman' is a magnificent nine-minute odyssey where silky arps loop around fluttering melodic leads. The chugging beats have a perfect mix of snap and deepness so quickly hypnotise you. There is always soothing going on throughout the track, whether that's a classic falsetto vocal sample, Middle Eastern-style chords or textured guitar licks. It's an epic, slow-burning dance floor workout that also comes as a shorter version and a widescreen instrumental.

My Friend Dario was last here with his Senza Estate album in August, which was a perfectly dreamy summer soundtrack. He shows another side here as his wonderful Food For Woofers Remix brings driving, club-ready technoid beats and warped bass under an explosion of melodies that will twist late-night dance floors inside out.

These sounds are designed to keep everyone warm all winter long.

Aura Safari's richly immersive Island Dreams album has been remixed by a selection of artists close to Hell Yeah. Ahead of them releasing their own originals on the label in 2025, SIRS, Calm, Dawn Again, Secret Soul Society and Aura Safari themselves all contribute to the collection which is out on 14 March.

First up, Japanese downtempo hero Calm offers up a signature Mellow Mellow Acid remix and dub version of 'Sur Mon Balconnet' that is smooth and zoned out as cosmic synths and gentle acid loops ripple next to whimsical reeds. New Balearic beat boss My Friend Dario's take on 'Riserva Naturale' is a percussive tropical jumble with lots of open space for deep thinking. Sirsounds Records label head SIRS returns to the label after his Woman EP earlier this year. He flips 'Wave Riding' into a loose-limbed and funky sound with 80s pads and well-treated vocal hooks. He also adds his own snappy drums and ass-wiggling basslines to 'Disco Mantra'.

Dawn Again dropped his widely acclaimed 'pubwave' album last year and has already backed it up with more escapist originals in 2025. His version of 'Wave Riding' casts you free from land and floats you out to sea on a raft of rubbery bass and widescreen synths. Secret Soul Society aka Cal Gibson, one-half of Nottingham's deep house and downtempo outfit Neon Heights back in the 2000s, steps up to rework 'Dancing in the Moonlight'. It's a dubbed out Afro disco number with playful horns and wobbly rhythms. Elsewhere Aura Safari rework several of their own originals with new dub versions that bliss them out for ever deeper dance floor trips.

This collection brings an array of new yet sympathetic perspectives to the still magical originals.

Hell Yeah series File Under Balearic Gabba continues its mission to bring some vital, previously digital-only Balearic Gabba weaponry to vinyl for the first time. This second volume has again artwork by Planet Luke and features Wallace next to new school stars SIRS and Pedro Bertho.

Tartan Records label head and British talent Wallace opens up with a remix of Sewell And The Gong's 'Better Words' that has been a real summer hit for label head Marco Gallerani.
The original came on Jason Boardman's fine Before I Die label and is one of those jams that transcends genre and wins over techno heads, Adriatic beach groovers and festival main stages alike. It is "proper Balearic Gabba" says Marco with its tropical percussion, humid pads and watery droplets all adding lush atmosphere to the dubby drums. The chords and reedy leads are beautifully delicate but get floors in a blissed-out, loved-up trance.

SIRS is an artist on fire right now and already impressed on this label with his remix of Aura Safari which is one of the year's standout Balearic house jams. He has a new single on the way for Hell Yeah but first flips label mate My Friend Dario's 'Tellaro' into a wobbly, psyched-out dub disco and breakbeat chugger. The zippy synths and shimmering keys are underpinned with a taught bassline and playful vocals that bring great fun and irresistible party vibes to any set.

Hell Yeah mainstay Verdo then has his 'Boulevardier' remixed by Pedro Bertho, a rising talent from Brazil with a steamy South American style. This one is a modern beach classic that unites both young and old heads with its frayed analogue drums and snappy percussion joining the dots between 80s Chicago house, new age and Balearic with its big piano chords and phased bass all getting hands the air.

Anti Fascist Groove Thang

This last Sublime Saturdays at Gelato Vero Caffe was a beauty. Kameron Burns shared his surrealist landscapes, and Cardboard Psychic and Thomas Fitzgerald complemented them with their serene soundscapes.

This one's another Deep House ditty with some remixes, and a few more edits than usual. Please check the accompanying mix from Cardboard Psychic with his righteous, reverie-inducing offering on this slightly-overcast, but visually stunning San Diego sunset.

Gelato Vero Sublime Saturdays 6 . 14 . 25

Tapped into some lower-tempo goodness this last Sublime Saturday and came up with some Space Music. It was hard to believe what a joy the sun was to behold. The weather this week was generous, and this Saturday was the cherry on top. Thank you to everyone who came by to celebrate!

This was one of my few planned mixes, but for good reason--this week's theme was "Invasive Brits." There were a couple of obvious candidates like Goldfrapp, Roisin Murphy, Psychemagik, Ewan Pearson, and David Holmes, but it took some work, because I wanted to have the progression of it mixed in complementary keys. It was worth the work, and it's a little more lively than my previous attempts to stick with the theme of the week.

If you've been enjoying Cardboard Psychic's accompanying sets, you'll need to start attending more! He didn't record his set this week, so it's been lost to all but those who attended. Sorry!

Klaus Benedek grew up in a small town near Vienna. His interest in electronic music began during the 90s techno hype. He spent hours watching video clips on MTV and viva and thus gaining knowledge about electronic music. In 2004, he began teaching himself to produce. Gathering his inspiration wherever he could, he began collecting 12" vinyl records the same year and 2 years later got his first dj-gigs. From 2008 till 2010 he was one of the resident DJs at the MNML Thursdays in the Camera Club. In 2012 he started with Alex Kolodziej the event-series Tellerbetrieb. Currently he finds most of his inspiration in Chicago House, Deep House, Disco and Breakbeat. After releases on labels like Petrol Dollar, Subversaal, rekooda, Soul Shift Music, Clean and Dirty Recordings and tanzbar, Klaus launched his own label forTunea in 2014.

As the son of a professional flamenco singer, Thomas has always been surrounded by music.  Exposure to flamenco influenced him because it has a dynamic range of emotions—from the "deep singing" style of cante hondo, to the more lively alegrias.  He has also worked in the corporate, independent, and online music industry for a number of years.  At one point he was a Content Manager for the Electronic Music genre at MP3.com, where he screened over 500 songs per day.  Exposure to a wide range of music explains the range of genres in his mixes—he uses whatever carries the mood.  From listening to Umm Kulthum's "Enta Omri" in his childhood, to New Wave and  Industrial as a teen, it became difficult for him to stick to one sound. Though vinyl was his original format of choice when he started in the 90s, the use of digital mixing has helped him better form soundscapes to expand your headspace.  Let him play with your moods for a spell.
