160 years ago, Guy Woodson enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Nelson on September 16, 1864.

In the later years of the Civil War, the Union army struggled to fill their ranks.  Because Kentucky was an important, yet divided, border state, Lincoln did not allow the recruitment of Black Kentuckians early in the war. In 1864, as the Union's need for soldiers grew, Federal forces turned to Kentucky African Americans. First, they accepted only the enslaved men of disloyal owners or loyal owners with their permission.

By June of 1864, Federal authorities lifted many of the restrictions on African American enrollment and Camp Nelson, Kentucky, became a hub for USCT enlistment.

October 13, 2025 - Union Army Enrollment at Camp Nelson

SRI scholars will use historic maps and federal census records from Prince George’s County to investigate landowners and identify enslavers with economic or social connections to the foundation and development of the MAC. Most importantly, the project seeks to identify and develop narratives surrounding the lives of local enslaved and free African Americans who lived near the MAC. Scholars will work together to use digital tools to map the local geography of slavery surrounding the MAC. All Scholars will present their research at the program’s culminating poster symposium and will be expected to disseminate their work via digital media.

JOSEPH - Part 2 - "Family Dysfunction Disobedience and Denial " - Genesis 37:1-36 - The context of Chapter 37 and the previous history of the family of Jacob is critical to understand the journey that Joseph experiences.  The story of the family is dysfunctional, replete with moments of disobedience and denial.  All of these has terrible consequences.  In the account of this particular Chapter, we see many of those affects as we witness Joseph experiencing the love of his father, the hatred of his brothers, and the complete loss of his entire future and inheritance, as he is sold as a slave.  What a roller coaster of thoughts and emotions for a 17 year old.   However, through it all, we have deep and practical lessons to our lives.  Come and hear the power testimony of the Word of God.

Comparative Perspectives on Slavery Before the Age of Exploration Panel

We start with headlines from Starbucks, Amazon, MIT, Ohio University, Harvard, UPS, Fairfax County, Allina Healthcare and Tunisia. In a possible major shift, Saudi Arabia announced the end to their system of contract slave labor known as the Kafala system, we discuss how that may play out in reality. A recent piece from In These Times spoke with unionized workers at Reuters in British Columbia who are fighting their employer's collaboration with ICE. Over 100,000 workers launched a mass strike in New Zealand against austerity policies crushing the country's education and healthcare sectors. Finally, Capital and Main put out an excellent report this week on efforts by workers at dollar stores in Louisiana to organize for better pay and conditions outside the usual NLRB process, and how that might be replicated elsewhere.

Topic and Guest: Today the show focuses on the freedom seeking Black radical tradition, the story of a family focused on freedom and the resistance that took place everyday against slavery.  Our topic, Free Frank McWorter, Freedom Seekers & New Philadelphia is presented in the context of the current attack on Black history and the university.  The show features a conversation between Dr. Abdul Alkalimat and AfricaNow!’s Executive Producer and Co-Host James Pope.  Dr. Abdul Alkalimat is one of the founders of Black Studies and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.  His academic/organizing trajectory stems from former chair of the Chicago chapter of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in the 1960s to a prominent actor in the African Liberation Support Movement in the 1970s to being a co-founder of the Black Radical Congress in 1998.

It was 1839 and Frank and Lucy McWorter were getting married for the second time. ...Though there was plenty of symbolism in their renewed vows, the McWorters remarried for a more pragmatic reason — they had been enslaved in Kentucky when they first committed to each other, but such marriages were rarely respected by U. S. courts. ....He began freeing his family in 1817. ...The McWorters spent $14,000 to free their family. Adjusted for inflation, that is nearly $500,000 in 2023. ...In 1836, Frank divided forty-two acres of his land into town lots and founded the town of New Philadelphia. The town, the first officially founded by African Americans, prospered with both Black and white residents and formed part of a larger rural community of farmers.

A Center for Historical Research presentation featuring Ceyda Karamursel, Lecturer in the Department of History at SOAS, University of London.

Shaped by successive military and diplomatic conflicts, the second half of the nineteenth century witnessed large-scale forced displacement across the Ottoman Middle East. With it came a protracted crisis that unsettled established legal and ethical frameworks, producing a volatile environment in which the slave trade persisted and adapted, even as formal efforts to suppress it were put in place. This paper focuses on a key moment in this prolonged crisis—the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877–78 and its aftermath—to examine the practices of Ottoman slaveholders and traders, many of them women, operating at various scales, from elite mistresses to small intermediaries. In doing so, it sheds light on how local structures and practices—social, economic, and legal—collided with the emerging global moral order that reframed legal distinctions of race, ethnicity, religion, and state-belonging, with long-term implications for the decades that followed.

About Ceyda Karamursel: 
Ceyda Karamursel is Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of History at SOAS, University of London. Her research focuses on slavery and the contested meanings of freedom in the late Ottoman Empire. Her work has been supported by the Social Science Research Council, the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, and the American Council of Learned Societies, and has appeared in the Journal of Women’s History, Comparative Studies in Society and History, International Journal of Middle East Studies, and Gender & History, among others. She is currently completing a book titled The Sack and the Bowstring: A Global History of Ottoman Slavery and Freedom.
