Change of pace track today.  

Originally started as a track that would accompany a video about flying out of SeaTac International Airport on a red eye flight back when I was posting music videos on Facebook--since shifting to sharing Interbay tracks here on SoundCloud, it has been sitting "almost finished" in The Vault ever since.  

My rule about "every Interbay track must have a vocal element" was the sticking point.  This was always "meant" to be an instrumental, a jazzy piece for piano, drums, and atmospheric synths.  II had no idea what I could possibly use for a "vocal element."  

...until last night, when I realized that the original idea--marrying this video to footage of the complete process of arriving at the airport, all the way to boarding a plane at SeaTac, early in the morning--was still the best idea I'd had...  

So, I've married the instrumental track to a collage of found sounds from SeaTac Airport.  It means, this isn't a structured song...but it is a slice of life...  

Does it work better with those found sounds than it did as a pure instrumental?  I'm not sure.  I think if the found sounds were mixed deeper, being a bit less obvious...and maybe doing some panning tricks and doppler effects to make what you do hear of those found sounds give you that "theater of the mind" feeling of actually moving through the airport...then it might have been better than the instrumenatl--my worry is in its current configuration, the found sounds can take away from the music...and the vibe the music is trying to create on its own.  

On the other hand, I do think it's clever.  (...and how's THAT working out for me?)  

This track reminds me of the previous Interbay track "Tubeway"--which imagines a ride on the London Underground from Heathrow in to London proper.  Just it's about an airport and a plane, not the tube, and it's about Seattle...not the UK.  

Lots of little easter eggs in this one that will amuse any fans of Pacific Northwest music (not that they're "hidden" in anyway, of course.)

Are you one of the people who likes it when Interbay gets a little weird?  A little out there?  

Well, boy, do I have a SoundCloud Exclusive track for you on this sunny (at least in Seattle, after quite the rainy weekend) Monday morning!    

If I told you that I planned to make a swing jazz jump up western folk lounge bluegrass swamp blues big band boogie tune, I'd be lying to you--but that is somehow what I've ended up with here.  

I know I started off with a 1960s drum program, and I came up with the odd little two-step beat.  I thought I was headed towards a '60s garage pop rock thing...but it didn't go there, at all.  

I almost threw it away.  It felt like I was chasing something that wasn't there...but, then I remembered the months I spent at the Cricket Theater, working as an usher, when they did Greater Tuna--a two person, twenty character play that is chock ful of stereotypes and classic country.  

That's where I discovered Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys.  I had no idea there was something called Western Swing...but I loved it (espceially when mixed in with Patsy Cline and Hank Williams!)  

This is NOT Western Swing (no matter how many falsetto ad libs I threw in there)...but that pushed me to see how I could mix in swing-y jazz vibes...and then, suddenly, all sorts of genres fell into the blender...and this is the smoothie that came out.  

I originally named this "Frogstomp"--but, not only was that the name of the big album by Australia's grunge band Silverchair, it also worried me that it might be a reference to something offensive...so, I changed it to "Magnolia Stomp"--named for the Seattle neighborhood my late wife grew up in.  It has nothing to do with that neighborhood, but I needed a name.  

When I added the framing device--I realized that it really combined a lot of genres that are very specific to North America.  (Yes, I'm including Canada and Mexico...and yes, that is a mild rebuke to the current administration here in the States...but, whatevs...)  

The framing device:  It is a natural phenomena that certain atmospheric conditions at night can allow AM radio stations to "skip" great distances away from where they originated--and where people are used to hearing those stations...    

This is how rock and roll spread so quickly and so much faster than it would have otherwise.  This is how country and western artists were influenced by rhythm and blues, and vice versa...which is how rock and roll was born at all!  

So, this song starts and ends with some scratchy attempts to tune an AM radio and getting multiple different stations, all fighting to be received, late at night.  And that's why the song that follows is such a mixture of different styles (and even different eras)...it's getting a skip signal from time and space.  

(I'll blame The Doctor.  That's what U.N.I.T. would do.)  

Not your normal track--I couldn't even justify the "electronic" tag this time.  But, I think it is fun.  It shows that you really can do anything (and because of that, I'll continue to follow my muse wherever it points...even when it spins around like it did here.)

I am glad to present to you my third (but hopefully not last) installation of my "Busy mind" series.

And yes, I've decided that it is a series now...

Every May I go on an adventure and soft of get out of my comfort zone when it comes to creating music.

The previous versions of my Busy mind works have been my honest attempt at sampling...

Even though I wasn't exactly challenged by my friend with a weird sample to work with, I have decided to just pick a neat old sample at random and make some magic with it!!

Of course I had to completely change the arrangement, pitch, and have added my own drums, and vocals (DUH!) to it...

Took me an extremely long time to do, given the fact that, you know, it literally has like a thousand words...

The song itself is split between 4 quadrants of roughly similar size, and 9 smaller chunks that transition from one to another.

I cover my current state of mind, all of my doubts and stuff that happened to me or my loved ones very recently...

I honestly know very little about music. I just started composing/remixing as of a month ago just using pre composed midi tracks. I’m currently in the process of composing an avant grade opera. My biggest influencers are John Cage, Rammstein, Evanescence, Helloween, Bjork, Queens of the Stone Age and Krewella

Post-punk, dance, indie, electronic, and mutant pop in various styles (seriously!)--new tracks being posted daily (every day for over a year, so far!)
