Brady has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry, including serving as a director of equity trading at Barnard Jacobs Mellet, and head of Investec’s institutional securities and prime broking division.

In 2014, Brady began building the A2X Markets stock exchange, which went live in 2017.

Under Brady’s leadership, A2X has become a top stock exchange in South Africa, with 94 listed instruments and a market cap of over R6.6 trillion.

Vestact is an active investment management firm that manages assets on behalf of private clients in both rands and US Dollars through individualised investment accounts.

Theron is a respected trailblazer in the South African financial services industry. However, unlike many other investment heavyweights, he did not come from a financial background.

Theron graduated with a Master’s Degree in Energy Engineering from the University of Cape Town, specialising in oil, gas, coal, and electricity.

He then worked for a corporate in energy policy but quickly realised that he was better suited to be an entrepreneur and run his own company.

The internet was starting to gain traction, and he joined forces with a few friends and associates to start an online sports business which was sold to the Mweb/M-Net group. It became the foundation of the Supersport website.

They also started South Africa’s first online stockbroker Tradek. Although briefly listed on the JSE, Theron said it was a disaster and was ultimately delisted and shut down.

In 2002, he started Vestact, which has shown exceptional growth and now has R7.5 billion in assets under management (AUM).

In this episode of Smart Money, Zak Calisto – the founder and CEO of Karooooo – discusses the challenges he faced when building a global company.

Calisto studied at the University of South Africa and the University of Witwatersrand and completed an accelerated training program at Standard Bank between 1986 and 1991.

He then built up experience working at Vehicle Tracking Services from 1994 to 2001 and at Cell Communications from 1994 to 1996.

Calisto’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2001 when he founded Cartrack Holdings Limited as a joint venture with Netstar.

Cartrack separated from Netstar in 2004, and under Calisto’s guidance, it grew to become a powerhouse in tracking, data analytics, and business intelligence in South Africa.

In April 2021, Calisto delisted Cartrack from the JSE and listed Karooooo – which wholly owns Cartrack – on the Nasdaq, with a secondary listing on the JSE.

His extensive experience has helped him to grow Karooooo into a highly successful global company with 1.7 million subscribers across 23 countries.
