Ellen Grady and Tom Joyce talk about the life and activism of Peter DeMott, who passed away in 2009. In his honor, every year on Father's Day, the Peace Trot, a 5-k run (or walk) takes place in Ithaca. The funds raised are for the benefit of the Catholic Worker House in Ithaca.
We discuss the work members of Catholic Worker have been engaged in for decades, including plowshare actions against nuclear weapons. Currently, U.S. nuclear weapons are stationed in several European countries under the NATO sharing policy. The U.S. is planning on building more nuclear weapons at a staggering cost, despite the existential threat to life on the planet.

Crisis, war, injustice, and violence have a certain logic—and social change processes working to address these challenges carry a similar, reactionary logic. How can love help us to step out of the perceived reality of “what is possible” in building peace during conflict? Turning points in conflicts and crises are often mysterious, require acts of enormous creativity, and a willingness to risk. Social change is an artistic act, mobilizing love and prophetic imagination–and it requires us to step into the mystery of the unknown that lies beyond the far too familiar landscape of violence.

In this series, join Host Serena Bian in speaking with three people who bear witness to the best and worst of humanity, holding a courageous moral imagination. Working and witnessing the front lines of injustice, war, climate change, these peacebuilders, mystics, storytellers hold space for the miraculous to emerge, refusing to be bound by a perceived reality of “what is possible.”

Reared in segregated North Carolina, Aljosie began learning, teaching, and building social justice skills along with organizing in the 1960s as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lome, Togo, West Africa. She has been a servant-leader at the Institute of the Black World (Atlanta), a think tank and advocacy organization, and the Learning House (Atlanta) an independent Afrocentric freedom school. She has worked in community organizing in several southern and northern cities and in empowerment building with women’s circles, organizations, and colleges. With her co-worker, partner, and late husband, Vincent Harding, she built intergenerational relationships with social justice and peace organizations across the United States and abroad. Her organizational links have included the Bruderhof, Soka Gakkai International, Young Adult Quakers, the Dorothy Cotton Institute, the Walter Rodney Symposium and Foundation, Tewa Women United, Kid Cultivators, and the Yale-National University of Singapore. As a spiritual guide (director) she shares healing justice practices in all her organizational work.

Serena Bian
Serena is pursuing a life that remains attentive to the tenderness of a snail’s soft body and reverent to the miracle of its spiraled shell. Working with U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, Serena serves as a Special Advisor and brings a spiritual and systemic understanding to the public health crisis of loneliness and isolation. As a chaplain-in-training, Serena is pursuing questions of how we chaplain the end of extractive systems that isolate communities from themselves and one another. She is involved with multi-generational, multi-spiritual communities like the Nuns and Nones, devoted to courage, peacebuilding, and love. She participates on the Board of Commonweal and CoGenerate.

I think about this almost every day: How the same elders who preach about and long for the "outpouring of the Spirit in the last days", now disgustedly call that outpouring: "teens being woke".

Your children are in the streets fighting for the rights, safety, wellbeing, and protection of others than themselves. They are paying the price of friends, popularity, money, future careers, energy, emotional space, time, and even their freedom to stand with the oppressed, the imprisoned, the poor, the widows and orphans, the dispossessed and marginalised. What did you expect the Spirit of Jesus to look like?

Haven't you wondered how so many children and youth globally (!) can be caring about justice, what is right, equality, dismantling systems of misogyny, racism, and evil?

There is an global outpouring happening right under your noses, and you're missing it. Wake up. Wake up. The Spirit of God is moving, and you're missing it.

A Woke concept that doesn't get nearly the attention it demands is the concept of various "Determinants of Health (DoH)." They are institutions, systems, and societal structures that have health-relevant outcomes, and the Woke Marxists have a few objectives in pushing this perspective, which amounts to "society is preventing you from having optimal health and needs to be controlled by Woke Marxists." There are social determinants of health (SDoH), commercial determinants of health (CDoH), economic determinants of health (EDoH), political determinants of health (PDoH), and more (and more). Each is an opportunity to do surveillance, problematize, and seize control over entire systems to be reorganized to achieve Woke Marxist goals. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay reveals in two papers that professional associations like the American Medical Association (and others) have designated voting as a "social determinant of health" with "political determinant of health" consequences and have used this bogus designation to justify doing voter registration and targeted voting drive campaigns from the platform of psychiatric healthcare services. Topic and Guests: To contextualize the current nationwide protests in Kenya, AfricaNow! goes into its archive to present a conversation with Waringa Wahome that explores radical histories of Kenya and the praxis of liberation (aired April 6, 2022 https://soundcloud.com/africanowonline/africanow-apr-6-2022-radical-histories-and-liberation-in-kenya-pt-1).  Waringa Wahome is an organizer, political theorist, lawyer, member of Mathare Social Justice Center, the Communist Party of Kenya as well as the Kenyan Organic Intellectuals Network.  The show also features Valentine Githae of the Gen Z movement briefly discussing the protest movement in Kenya. 

Since June 18, 2024 Kenya has witnessed nationwide protests against the government’s proposed tax increase, mismanagement, corruption and more.  The youth-led or Gen Z demonstrations has forced Kenyan President Ruto to abandon the tax proposal and fire majority of his cabinet.  According to Kenya National Commission on Human Rights the police used excessive force to clampdown on the protests that has led to over 50 deaths, over 600 arbitrary arrested and over 50 missing.  In the face of this crackdown the protests continued yesterday July 16.   The show also features a July 16, 2024 conversation with Valentine Githae of the Gen Z movement briefly discussing the protest movement in Kenya.

Magnus Fiskesjo on China and Myanmar June 28

Ira Helfand, founder and former president of the organization International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, talks about the dangers of nuclear weapons and nuclear war, and global efforts toward banning these weapons. Ira describes the current threat of nuclear war as real and growing and describes how catastrophic the consequences would be, even in a limited strike.
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which was ratified in 1970 was ineffective, since the six nations that owned nuclear weapons at the time did not follow through (five of these were on the UN Security Council). More recently, in 2021, the Treaty to Ban Nuclear Weapons came into force. The "Back from the Brink" campaign was launched at that time. The nine nuclear arms states that are opposed to the treaty are the U.S., France, the UK, China, Russia, Israel, India, Pakistan, and North Korea. One reason why even the possession of nuclear weapons is dangerous, is because we cannot assume that all actors who have access to the weapons and the codes to launch them will behave rationally. Historically, there were several close calls.

Ira Helfand on Nuclear Weapons July 5

Jim McDonald, Sri Lanka country specialist at Amnesty International USA, talks about the Amnesty report on Sri Lanka, which was released on April 10, 2024. It is titled "Ready to Repress any Protest: Sri Lanka: Unlawful Use of Weapons During Protests." 
This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of the end of the Civil War, but there has been virtually no accountability for abuses or the forced disappearances of more than 60,000 people. Mothers continue to protest demanding to know what happened to their family members. Because of the economic collapse, protests have intensified since March 2022. The report found that in 17 out of 30 peaceful protests from 2022 to 2023, the government used excessive force.

Today, Robert owns a growing trucking business and courageously shares his story to inspire others, including a recent invitation to address students at Princeton University. 

Summarizing Robert’s advice for those transitioning out of prison: Stay resilient. Stay proactive. Develop a vision for yourself. Know that prison doesn't define who you are. Follow the 5 P’s to Success: Persistent Practice Prevents Poor Performance. We all possess value. Stay the course!
