Mikayli - Floral Springs

The bird songs were recorded in one take on the southern edge of eastern Saskatchewan prairie upland (Moose Mountain) on May 21, 2015 at dawn.  In southern Saskatchewan, the uplands are a result of glacial deposits. From the south, these uplands unexpectedly and mysteriously, rise up above the otherwise flat plains. The height releases extra rainfall which allows trees, ponds, and an alternate ecology to survive. This location is pasture, scrubland and ponds on the southern edge, overlooking the vast plains extending endlessly to the south. 
When I started to compose this music, I listened for the spaces between the bird calls. I let the tempo of bird calls become my tempo, and I let the slow arrival of dawn unfold the musical ideas. I considered the mystery of the land and the solstice in finding the musical key. 
When modern society looks at the summer solstice, it sees a great imbalance: The longest day/shortest night. The ancient societies which followed the sun, saw the sun stop and hang motionless for days in its yearly north/south motion during the solstice, which implies instead, a great balance in cosmic forces. 
For relaxation and meditation, yoga, tai chi, reflection, and study.
Musical explorers: This sonic environment will support your improvisations in E flat minor pentatonic and F# major pentatonic.
