Years ago, I did my own version of the soundtrack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game and although I love it to pieces, it is the second game in the series that I love more fondly. I also rearranged/composed elements for my own version of the game's soundtrack last year, which turned out better than I'd hoped.

I have also done my own version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 but as we know, that game is divided into two halves: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 plus Sonic & Knuckles. Here is the much overdue second half of my own versions of these classic tracks. I hope you enjoy going fast and speedy along these renditions.

Sonic & Knuckles starts off where the last half ended; Sonic has to race across more zones to prevent Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman) from resurrecting the fallen Death Egg Zone. The adventure continues with Sonic finding himself in a vast underground system with lava flows and, in the distance, the remains of the Death Egg Zone - Dr. Robotnik is using the energy of the lava to fix his giant contraption. Sonic races across the lakes of lava to try and thwart the evil scientist. I love Lava Reef Zone too, the tune feels that there is a heroic purpose but still fraught with danger and perils of heated demises.

LEAPING OVER THE HOT LAKES OF LAVA REEF ZONE

Sonic & Knuckles starts off where the last half ended; Sonic has to race across more zones to prevent Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman) from resurrecting the fallen Death Egg Zone. The adventure continues with Sonic finding himself in an ancient, ornate temple that once was the centre of the Echidna civilisation. Deep within, Sonic is ambushed by Knuckles once again, determined to stop Sonic from taking the Master Emerald. But, he is easily defeated by the blue blur and to his horror, Dr. Robotnik steals the emeralds instead - using its unlimited energy to rebuild and power the revived Death Egg Zone. In fact, it was his plan from the start! Having realised the errors of his ways, Knuckles joins Sonic's plight and aids him in finding the teleport to the Sky Sanctuary Zone. 

I love that this place (although technically Act 2 of Lava Reef Zone) is the intended Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and wanted to link that by blending/rearranging it that both themes could be heard - bridging the gap as it were. I have tried to capture a sense of nostalgic wonder and mystery so hopefully that comes across to you.

DISCOVERING ANCIENT SECRETS IN HIDDEN PALACE ZONE (LAVA REEF ACT 2)

SCRAPPING WITH KNUCKLES IN THE MURAL CHAMBER (IT IS KNUCKLES TIME 2)

The adventure continues with Sonic and Knuckles teleporting to a vast ancient structure in the sky called the Sky Sanctuary Zone. In the distance, the newly-restored Death Egg Zone rises higher and higher into the atmosphere on its way into orbit around the planet. It is a frantic dash to get there in time! I love the setting and theming of this level and found the music to be surreally beautiful. I have tried to capture the feeling of being high in the sky, where one wrong step could mean plummeting into the cloudy void below.

FLOATING ABOVE THE WORLD IN THE SKY SANCTUARY ZONE

Sonic & Knuckles starts off where the last half ended; Sonic has to race across more zones to prevent Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman) from resurrecting the fallen Death Egg Zone. At the end of Sky Sanctuary Zone, Sonic leaps onto a floating contraption that takes him deep with Dr. Robtonik's restored, spherical space station weapon. The place pulses with electricity, being amplified by the limitless energy of the Master Emerald. Views of space and planet below can be seen out the vast contraption's windows. Sonic races through the metallic maze, even defying gravity and running on light itself! The tune oozes with final level vibes and the bass pulses with electric/industrial sounds that reflects Dr. Robotnik's style and insanity. I had a lot of fun recreating this zone and I wanted it to go on even longer (but then Sonic wouldn't catch up).

BREAKING INTO THE DEATH EGG ZONE

I have also done my own version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 but as we know, that game is divided into two halves: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 plus Sonic & Knuckles. Here is the much overdue second half of my own versions of these classic tracks. I hope you enjoy going fast and speedy along these renditions.

Sonic & Knuckles starts off where the last half ended; Sonic has to race across more zones to prevent Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman) from resurrecting the fallen Death Egg Zone. This is it, the final showdown or rather the final chase. Sonic, with the help of Knuckles, destroys the power generator of the Death Egg and it begins to break apart. However, an unyielding Dr. Robotnik grabs the Master Emerald in his Egg Robot and launches himself away from the disintegrating space station. Intent on escaping and getting as far away from the hedgehog and echidna, Sonic uses the power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic (or Hyper Sonic with the addition of collecting the Super Emeralds) and dashes through space to pursue and stop the diabolical madman. Gotta go FAST!!!
This tune sounds menacing, that the fate of the world is on the line if Robotnik escapes. Again, the bass is awesome and the themes of going fast is ever-present.

Oh yeah, I renamed the tune as a nod to my favourite sci-fi show, Doctor Who :).

DIAL DOWN TO DOOMSDAY ZONE (FINAL BOSS)

Sonic & Knuckles starts off where the last half ended; Sonic has to race across more zones to prevent Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman) from resurrecting the fallen Death Egg Zone. The adventure is over, the Death Egg has fallen once again and Robotnik has yielded the Master Emerald (with a little force) back to Knuckles, who has returned it to its rightful place in the Hidden Palace Zone. This finally allows Angel Island to rise up into the sky once again where it belongs, with Knuckles returning to his role by guarding the Master Emerald.
The credits tune nods back to Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 by being a medley/mash up of the game's level themes and I love how it does that.

I have really enjoyed making them in this project and as a bonus, I have stitched all of them together to make a sort of 'other' or 'alternative' longer credit tune. I hope you enjoy them as much as I came up with them. Oh, I just had to end it with the Super Sonic theme, I HAD TO!!
