Sky Sanctuary Zone [YM2612 + SN76489]

This is a mashup between Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Ice Cap Zone Act 1 theme with the previously unreleased Jetzons song Hard Times, made with Konami's VRCVI (also known as VRC6) sound chip. Sonic the Hedgehog 3's soundtrack was set to be a collaboration between Michael Jackson and Sega, but the partnership fell apart. Still, some of the tunes survived anyway, like Ice Cap Zone's theme, composed by Brad Buxer, Michael Jackson's friend and band member. This theme is a new version of an early unreleased track by Buxer's former band, so I thought it would be interesting to combine both.

What I love about Sonic 3's soundtrack is that it is sooo funky and rhythmic so please enjoy my version of the iconic file select/options screen theme - you'll notice the layers do get louder to a certain degree...:D

Years ago, I did my own version of the soundtrack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game and although I love it to pieces, it is the second game in the series that I love more fondly. I also rearranged/composed elements for my own version of the game's soundtrack last year, which turned out better than I'd hoped. 

Since then, I have been wanting to complete the trilogy as it were and do justice to Sonic 3. Sonic 3's scope was much grander than 2 so the game was split into Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles respectively. For this first half I will be uploading the tunes from Sonic 3 first. Then, under a new album cover, I will upload the tracks - that are currently in the works - from Sonic & Knuckles so watch that space. Also, the multiplayer/competition tracks will be uploaded with them too.

My approach to this project was once again that I wanted to evoke a sense of retro-gaming nostalgia mixed with some of my own electronic elements to bridge over play-loops. The overall scale and rhythms of Sonic 3 is a lot more complex and it was a challenge to get the notes and themes in place. Not to mention in the original soundtrack, there were elements from Michael Jackson's sound team under the banner of Brad Buxer. Now, under copyright laws, I cannot use the original sound effects from those tracks but I have done my best to replicate/replace them with sounds I have in my software. 

I hope they take you back to a time of childhood, a time of simpler times and cracking break-through, "got to go fast" games. Please enjoy the title theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

File Select Right

At the end of the first Act in this game, there is a mini boss battle that aids in the transition of the levels. I like how it evokes a sense of playfulness and that these aren't as challenging as the big bad Dr. Robotnik. I wanted to create a sense of coolness from this tune so enjoy people!

Mini Boss Time

Just wow, the transition from Angel Island Zone to Hydro City Zone literally takes the plunge. Sonic is dropped into the depths of Angel Island in its flooded, underground labyrinth tunnels. The place is ornately decorated and even with all the water, speed is of the essence. I have tried to evoke the sense of wonder and coolness that the original tune had and thought it would be pretty awesome to add oriental sounding instruments to add to that wonder. Enjoy!

TAKING THE PLUNGE IN HYDRO CITY ZONE

When I first heard Marble Garden Zone, I didn't think of it but...over time I began to love it entirely. It just oozes funkiness and captures the essence of exploring mysterious ruins - Angel Island itself is one of the best locations in the whole Sonic franchise. Enjoy exploring people!

AVOIDING THE DEBRIS IN MARBLE GARDEN ZONE

Yeah, I will admit it, I was in the majority of people who got stuck on this zone - due to a certain barrel...Anyway, enough of that, I tried to capture the sense of a creepy carnival at night atmosphere and I hope I captured that haha. On a side note, I really like the Bat Bot badniks in this level, thought they always looked cool. Enjoy!

HAVING BARRELS OF FUN IN CARNIVAL NIGHT ZONE

The first time I heard this tune, I was in complete awe, it just sounded serene and super cool. The feeling of seeing Sonic snowboarding down a snowy mountain was just ecstatic. At the end, dropping into the caverns beneath was such a blast! Enjoy people, Ice Cap Zone forever!

SNOWBOARDING DOWN THE PICTURESQUE ICE CAP ZONE

I love the atmosphere of Dr. Robotnik's levels and this game delivered to an amazing standard. His machines merged with the ruins of Angel Island with the Death Egg Zone in the background was just super epic. They always have a sense of menacing presence and I have tried to (and hopefully succeeded) capture that feeling. Enjoy and watch out for Knuckles!

ROCKETING INTO THE SKIES OF LAUNCH BASE ZONE

What a Zone!! The atmosphere!! The Showdown up in the stormy skies against Dr. Robotnik in his best final battle machine! This tune is definitely the best final boss tune in the Sonic franchise and I have tried my best to capture that feeling. Keep going fast people and don't fall!! And this is the climax of the first half of Sonic 3 as Sonic & Knuckles is on the horizon!!

I know this tune technically doesn't appear in Sonic 3 but...for the sake of my project, I wanted to include it in this first half. Knuckles theme is pretty groovy and playful so I hope you enjoy re-visting those memories battling him - until he finally realises what's actually going on and becomes my favourite character in the series - that redemption arc!! It Is Knuckles Time

An epic battle against the mad Dr. Robotnik and then a phemonenal tune to close the first half of the epic that is Sonic 3 before going onto the second half in Sonic & Knuckles. I love how cool it sounds and how emotionally groovy it sounds. Enjoy people!
