"Malaria, Devouring Mother is an audio guide to murky ecologies near and far: from a biology lab in Buffalo to the artist's studio in Los Angeles; from the pressure of hydraulic oil fracking to the puncture of a gene gun. The soundscape draws out the parasitic noise of extractive capitalism and the entwined politics of infection between body and geography, and it builds upon Shin's long-term explorations of the historical life of malaria as well as the politics of contamination. Reflecting on the internal rhythm of the parasite, which causes and manifests the cyclical nature of malaria, Shin presents a sonar oscillation between the contamination of pulse, human and non-human bodies, and the rippling legacies of colonialism."

Dee Fry is London based neurodivergent multi-instrumentalist musician / composer / vocalist / songwriter / visual and sound artist. She creates new intricate music, songs, & ethereal soundscapes through which they have coined the term/concept ‘Stimscapes’, otherworldly yet welcoming. Blending elements from art-pop / post-rock, experimental, ambient, folk-songs, electronica, to contemporary soundscapes and live improvisations, she records & performs often layered sonic song explorations through playing electric guitars / acoustic guitars / keyboards / piano / synths, as a singer / vocalist, & through using sampled objects / field recordings / recycled sounds / audio-visuals & adapted tech.

Often exploring relationships between reverberating themes of ‘Sound / Senses / Regulation / Delay / Decay’, of ‘Stimming / Repetition’, and through reflecting of what they describe as their experience of “ND/PD+Embodiment / Orbiting”, or of what they call “circuits harmonising aütmospheric darkness & light” and “aiming for a form of ND/PD+affirming ecomusicology”, she makes solo & collaboratively with a diverse range of interdisciplinary musicians and artists.

Stimscape Songs EP - Dee Fry (Servals)

ep.3 [shaking heads, bending spines, liberating one’s body]: Inspired by her own pain in the face of hostile political climates, german rap‘s resistance to assimilation, and the arabic songs of her childhood, Mona Khaled‘s [Mona Abdel Baky] mixes become moving yet danceable artefacts of time. It‘s these moments of communities coming together into seemingly unorganised, liberating choreographies of shaking heads, bending spines and moving bodies that Mona accompanies with their sonic practice. For this session she curated a special mix that together with the interview explores how sounds of one’s past can become the soundtrack of tomorrow.

PLAY TIME ep.3 [shaking heads, bending spines, liberating one’s body] With Mona Khaled

I tried to think of an object that I use every day – an object that could produce multiple contrasting sounds, but also an object that is instantly recognisable. My white fold-up bicycle was the result of this search and I set to recording various sounds of the chain, breaks, wheel, bells and bag. I also sampled some unconventional sounds, such as recording the sound of the wheel spokes hitting against a pen. Every sound in this piece was originally sampled from my bicycle.
For me, this piece was about experimenting with the familiar vs the unfamiliar. The bicycle is very recognisable from its sounds alone, so I enjoyed contrasting the manipulated, unfamiliar sounds with the rawer samples. How far could I remove a sound from its original identity?
