For the eighth session of our series on poetry and sound, curator and co-host Pia Chakraverti-Würthwein invites Natasha Ginwala for an evening of sonic drift and tidal resonance.

From the murmuring tongues of mangroves to deep-sea hums and estuarial murmurs, this session grounds us in our relationship to the bodies of c that give us life. Listening becomes a method of mapping submerged histories and sensing what moves below the surface. With poetry, field recordings, and shared reflection, we follow the vibrations of water as memory, as movement, as witness. This session invites us to listen with the whole body—attuned to both the quiet pull and the sudden swell. We are particularly excited to share a couple of tracks from Natasha’s recently released vinyl The Ancestral Well: Pulse to Terrain, conceived with Sarathy Korwar as part of Sharjah Biennial 16 ‘to carry.’

Natasha Ginwala is a curator, writer, and researcher. She is co-curator of Sharjah Biennial 16 (2023–25), artistic director of Colomboscope, Sri Lanka, and was associate Curator at Large at Gropius Bau, Berlin (2018–2024). Ginwala co-directed the 13th Gwangju Biennale and was part of the curatorial team of the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (2014), Contour Biennale 8, documenta 14 (2017), as well as co-curating numerous major international exhibitions. Ginwala is a widely published author with a focus on contemporary art, visual culture, and social justice.

Pia Chakraverti-Würthwein is a curator and writer based in Berlin. She previously worked at Esther Schipper as an Artist Liaison, and before that was a freelance curator on projects with Fondazione Prada, Slavs and Tatars, and SAVVY Contemporary, among others.

Music for Lower Back Pain - Exercise 4

By a quiet stream in the nature of Pai, Northern Thailand, I sat with my Rav Vast and dove inward.
“In & Out” is a live handpan journey, recorded in one take — wrapped in the wild soundscape of the jungle: flowing water, winds, birds, and a steady inner pulse.

Most of the time, my eyes were closed — no plan, just breath, presence, and surrender.
Through the music, I try to create a space to pause, to breathe, to reconnect, and to remember the light within.

I hope this moment brings you calm, softness, and a place to land — just as I needed when I played.

Also, the piano player who started off gigging where he could, while working at the Westminster Gas and Coke Company, and ending up with his own 1955 Cinemascopic short, showing off him and his orchestra with the hit record Stage Coach, featured on our Sunday morning ride this week. Familiar Sound

Influenced by the symbolism of water in Taoism, where it is the softest and most yielding substance, to overcome the hard and rigid, yet nothing can compete with it, it also made me associate with the power of the oscillation of the water molecules during the phase change. 

This water soundscape composition uses the water sound as the main narrative device, presenting the process of water circulation on a microscopic level, i.e. the frequency fluctuations of the water molecules, regarding different forms and stages of water, from a flowing tap, to a fountain, the River Thames, and finally boiling water.

Every week in Berlin, we invite artists to share the music they love. These recordings come straight from our space, just as they were played.

All sets at migas are captured from the output of our Isonoe ISO420 mixer into a Tascam FR-AV2 recorder via balanced cables, in WAV 48kHz / 32-bit float.

The mastering chain includes only a touch of analog-style saturation (BB Tubes), applied in parallel to add warmth and cohesion, followed by a transparent limiter (L2) to gently control peaks.

The final file is exported as FLAC 48kHz / 16-bit.
